Greetings Forum and my rebaptism into the MB diesel world today

Greetings everyone in the Shopforum Diesel world. I reentered the MB diesel world last week with the ebay purchase of a China Blue 1980 240D that I love dearly. I started with a 1979 300TD that I rescued from my Dad's shop's boneyard in 1993 or so. I rebuilt the engine and the car and rapidly fell off the cliff owning 4 240 115s (one was my wife's engagement ring) and a 124 300D before getting distracted by speed and a quick succession of Porsches that never made me very happy. After I brought the new 123 home last week, I changed all of the filters and fluids, adjusted the valves, replaced the shocks and tires, sourced two matching blue hubcaps for the missing ones and brought everything up to commuting spec (120 miles 3 times a week). I thought I had it all under control. Until today 20 miles from work when the car shut off completely with no warning. I coasted to the side of the road and popped the hood expecting that the thottle linkage had popped off the IP. Nope...hmmm..filters must be clogged from the B100..spares in the trunk... Replaced the filters, pumped the pump...nothing...cracked the fuel lines and bled out the air...nothing...removed the large filter and filled it with fuel from the old filter just in case it had too much air...nothing...discuss tow starting with the NCDOT rescue crew that stopped just after I did and have been watching me with amused detachment while my frenzy builds. I look at the IP and I can't believe it let me down...I reach for my cell phone to call AAA and then the car repair mantra of old flashes in front of my eyes...its most likely the simplest thing you can think of...I look over at the DOT guy and ask if he has any diesel...I was at work 20 minutes later. I need a fuel level sender.

Looking forward to learning from all of you.

Best,
Rich Mason

Glad that's all it was. I was afraid a chain break story was forthcoming. Good news....

Hey great story. That happened to me last summer. It was with my dads old Oldsmoblie Diesel, yes it still runs. He wanted me to use ot for a week just to get some miles on it. Said the fuel gauge did not work, but not to worrry he had just filled it, be sure not to run over 300 miles before filling it again.
Drove it just far enough to be out of walking back range and she quit. So I got the car trailor out and dragged it up an on and back home.
Well after two weeks of checking and fiddling, it occured to me that maybe, just maybe Dad was all wet. So I got a fresh can of diesel into the old wreck and it strarted right up. Drove it to the station and filled it with 17gallons. It has an 18 gallon tank.
So if you can't trust your own Dad, who can you trust?

Congrats on your new 240D!

Do you have the ebay link so we can check it out...?

I also recently purchased a China Blue 240D - love it. I'm at the stage where I get a little bit closer to the "E" on the fuel guage between fill-ups. I think I can actually go safetly under the "E", given that I can only put in about 13 gallons when its getting close to "E"mpty.

Unless it's really a 14 gallon tank...

Have fun with your car - the 240D is the best kept secret in automotive history.

- Patrick

Excellent story - glad it ended positive --- and quickly as I was holding my breath through the last few sentences!

Here is the ebay link. I wonder if anyone on this forum flamed the post for the "rare European delivery" comment. It does have the ED badge on the grille though. Easily good for an extra 5 bucks at resale. It does put the car's luxury heritage in perspective to think that someone would fly to Europe in 1980 to pick one of these up and go on vacation. Would have been an expensive trip before the current era of affordale air travel.

You paid half of what I did for mine. Congrats on your good fortune!

Tip - if you are like a lot of us here, you're going to want to clean up the engine bay at some point. When you do, make sure you put some plastic over the Glow Plug Relay so it doesn't get filled up with water.

Don't ask me how I found out about that...

Nice buy. Is it just me or does it lean towards the drivers side?
