Here in the US those heaters were the demise of many good VW's.

gasoline heaters

Some Porsches had them too and I think I remember a Corvair with one. Little guys fired right up and put out heat NOW.

Then they rusted out their heat exchangers, pumped CO into the cabin, and resulted in many accidents as well as some deaths.

But on those cold winter nights in Dallas, it was toasty warm at the local drive in where our virgins were sacrificed.
