Question fuel filter micron ratings?

Does anyone know the micron rating for the spin on fuel filters?

I did a forum search and came up with 1 micron.

Is this correct? That is very small. I would think your fuel filter would clog up very fast.

What micron rating does the gas station diesel pump have? I can see a large filter on most diesel pumps I go to.

Obviously different manufacuters probably make filters with different ratings for different applications. But I would think filters made for the MB diesels to all be about the same rating.

A 2 micron absolute will plugg fairly easly if you get into some really dirty fuel, I have never had the problem in my use of them.

Industry standard at present is 10 micron nomanul and 20 micron absolute, and that should be what's OEM from MB for these cars.

Most fuel filters on diesel pumps are same as above at 10/20 micron.

I run a Catapillar 2 micron fuel filter on my wifes Jetta TDI diesel and it lasts about 30,000 miles and is $10 at local truck center. OEM is 10/20 micron filter rated for 20,000 miles and $40+ at VW dealer.

Permacool sells a 1 micron unit with a water separator. I've used one with vegetable oil -- with proper prefiltering it will not plug.

This guy Greg A. Landuyt makes an adapter to use with a VW TDI diesel and the same unit can be used with OEM filter system on our 123's easy. He also has them for other diesels. He's a pretty good guy and I have meet his and even let him do the injectors on the TDI New Beetle I use to have.

So it's safe to assume that most OEM and aftermarket diesel fuel filters on the market are a 10 micron nominal rating?

Autozone, Pepboys, Fastlane, MB dealer, Perf Products, are all going to be about a 10 micron rating.

If I bought a fuel filter for a Dodge, VW or Freightliner...it's going to most likely be a 10 micron filter?

Then I'm pretty safe filtering my WVO with a 5 micron filter. 1 micron is probably overkill and unneccessary. Not to mention uses a lot of extra filters too.

If you have a new MB E320 CDI it is a 5 micron nomanal and 10 micron absulote so I have been told but I have no poof of this. Bosch says most fuel pump/enjector ware happens in the 5 to 7 micron sized particles on the current models of injection systems. I don't think our old '70's to mid '80's diesels are built to the tollerance of current new systems and neither do they operate at the extreme pressures of recent systems.
