You still have to lift the crank to get to it, and there are stretch bolts in there that will require you to replace them once the torque is broken. Cost there is right at $100.00. Not too bad. The rear seal is cheap.
Since the engine is out should you do it? Not my call, but I would, and I would spend the $350 to replace the oil pump. but only because I have had some other unfortunate occurances with that issue. But that is not my call.

I know for sure the owner was terrible, after buying it I went to change the oil and found a wrench stuck to the bolt under the oil pan.

He did not even use "mm" but inches!

moving an engine around the workshop?

Out of interest ...how do you home mechanics move your 617 engine around your wrkshop/garage as you work on it & even to & from the vehicle you removed it from? Reson I ask is I seem to recall it's a heavy old beast & I was wondering where I'd put it & how I'd move it around my workshop. ALso, I need to ship one 150 miles which requires me placing it in a trailer or rear of a pick up - how do you lift these things? Engine hoist or 2-3 blokes?

Steve

Yes the Engine hoist will get the job done. It is very heavy, but once its on the hoist its fairly easy on smooth and leveled ground.

I have used a 1in sockect a few times! It works on the bigger stuff.

I hate buying cars from owners like that.

you dont have too

You don’t have to replace the rear main seal mine did not leak at all so I left it alone. One week after installing the engine it started leaking a quart a week. Live and learn the hard way!
