engine change 240d to 300d ?
I broke the timing chain on my 1980 240d and have been told it isn't worth fixing. Can the 300d be used to replace it? Currently have a standard. Will an automatic fix back in without a lot of changes? If the 300d can be used to replace the 240d what years can be used. Would appreciate any info anyone may have.

Any 616/617 engine will fit, turbo or not.
This has been done several times, although most guys want to put the manny tranny on the 300D engine. Do a search. You will need the console, shifter assembly, and probably the driveshaft from the automatic, otherwise it will just bolt up. Any engine from 1975 up will fit so long as it is a 616/617 -- I believe the 603 is too long (although the 602 will fit, so will a 601). The normal damage from a broken chain is limited to brocken camshaft towers or camshaft -- my brother broke the crank in his 300D on the highway, totaled the engine due to cracks, etc, but the head was fine, just needed a valve job and new cam towers. If it's worn out, that's a different story. Peter
