When balancing jet engines, and attempting to get the tool to repeat within .0001 inches, the term that I prefer is "surgically clean".
Sounds a whole lot better than "clean enough to eat off". Hell, that might even be obscene. |

Bottom line,
You really shouldn't be using silicone sealer in these engines. The far better anerobic products will not spell engine death if a small piece comes free. I know they are easy- an readily available at Autozone and Walmart, but I try and use the newer products. RTV's made it into the parts stores in the 80's. Michael

Greg, although I didn't read it until after the fact, I did follow your "clean enough to eat off of" sermon...the parts were clean and freshly painted to begin with, and I hit every surface with paint thinner and allowed everything to dry before even thinking about starting with the RTV. Now all I need to do is get the air pockets out of the cooling system... |

And don't laugh too hard...when I was in Scouts, we were cleaning the engine room bilge on our boat, and to serve as a good example to the crew, I cleaned "my" portion off so well that I ate my lunch off of it It actually worked to motivate them... |
