W201 blower motor replacement lessons learned

Howdy,

I semi-successfully replaced the blower motor on my 190d 2.2 today. It's not hard at all, but here's a few tips:

(1) DON'T DROP ANY HARDWARE (dohh!!!). The big items will come out the evap drain, but the little items will only be found when they saw up the car.

(2) To get the fans off the old motor, I sawed the ends off the motor. That made it much easier to drive the motor shaft end out of the plastic fan. I used a 1/4" drive deep well socket held in a vise to support the other side of the fan.

(3) Take note of the direction of the fan rotation. It isn't too hard to figure out, but I didn't note this. Of course the motor only goes in one way.

(4) Drive the old fans onto the new motor a little at a time. I'd start with them approx 1/4" or so from being driven all the way flush to the motor shaft and "sneak up" on the correct position. It is MUCH easier to drive them in further than it is to drive them off again. I used a 1/4" drive socket to drive the fans on once the shaft prodruded.

(5) Take out the lower fan housing. There are 2 8MM screws holding it in. You can use it to get the fans positioned properly.

(6) Clean the evaporator and condensate pan while you are in there. Yes, this is about as bad as cleaning out a septic tank, but mine was clogged pretty good and it made a difference. Go ahead and get out the shop vac and zook up all that crud that is underneath the motor housing.

I had some difficulty getting the upper cover back into place and snapping the bottom clips into place. I think the problem is that the rubber gasket that seals the blower housing pieces together is very brittle and prevented the two housings from mating. Sure wished I could get one of those.

The only major problem is that I somehow bound up the wiper mechanism which then smoked the motor. I guess I'll be taking a trip to the boneyard on Monday.

Cheers,

Sholin
