Wood trim refurbishing

I have to replace the trim that is around my shifter but I'm trying not to spend 200$ on a new one. I found a used one but there are a couple small pieces of clear missing along with cracks in the clear. What I'm asking is can I just sand it down and re clear it or is there a stain I need. I don't want to buy this used piece if I can't fix it.
