Help! Need a good Alpine replacement cd changer for a 1998 E320 (becker 1692)
Hi all:
I'm looking to replace the oem 6 disc changer on my e320. After 6 years the unit has finally thrown in the towel. Now all i get is some half-arsed attempt to read discs, and then "NO DISC" will pop up on the stereo display. Fellow member Limited Edition was kind enough to point out that there's a cheaper alternative to replacing the $699 oem changer. "Get an alpine changer with M-bus and the $25 adapter" Question is: which alpine model fits with the becker 1692? and where can I find this "M-bus and $25 adpter" ?? Scott, do you know where I can locate such items? Much obliged! Mars |

If memory serves me correctly the 1692 is from a 96-98 year model car right? If so the adapater you need is more like $90 as the 96-98 radios have to receive a proprietary code from the changer inorder for it to be recognized by the radio. But after that any Mbus Alpine changer should work just fine.

hmm..... I thought all i need is an ai-net to m-bus adapter? But i was looking at the oem changer and there's 2 connectors that goes into it. one was the ai-net round cable connector, the other was a rectangular connector with 10 pins in 2 rows. The rectangular connector goes from the 1692 to the changer...
I managed to find an ai-net to m-bus adapter on crutchfield, but i'm not sure if I needed any additional adapters. The unit that i'm thinking of using is the Alpine CHA-S634 6-disc Ai-NET CD/MP3 Changer. Product Link |

You have two connectors going into the CD changer? Hmm, haven't seen that before. I am going to try and do the same (install a CHA-S634 using a factory deck as the controller) but I am having someproblems with the interface adapter. In theory this should all work but I don't know for sure myself. I am very confident that you will need more than the mbus-to-AiNet adapter. Best of luck and please post your results.

Thanks for the reply, mbsickness. I'll take a picture of the oem connectors going into the changer and post it later.

have the $250 6 CD changer from autotoys.com in my 98 E300. Completely compatible with radio head. Uses the "serial" looking connector with a square head to the adapter they include.

wow, so the only thing you purchased was the 6 disc changer? you didn't need to buy any other adapters?
btw, is your changer mp3 compatible? |

autotoys sells the adapter with the changer. It's your basic model so it doesn't do MP3. it seems to handle my home burn CDs just fine tho. Been in the car for over a year now.

I was able to add a 6 disc changer to my 98 E320 for about $400. It was installed by a place called "Hi Fi Buys" here in Atlanta. The unit was an Alpine CHMS630 (229.99), an adapter MBALPDMXV1 MB ALP (99.99) and installation 59.99. I am not sure of the adapter mfg, but if you need to I could call and get all of the particulars.
The unit has been flawless, sounds good, but doesn't play MP3's. Guy
