i think the size of the speakers depends on the audio package that was ordered when the car was new....my car has four 4x6 speakers in the front and back dash...but i believe some SDs came with 6.5s in the back, and 4 inch coaxials in the front....the best way to find out would be to measure the stock openings for the speakers....btw my 300SD is an 85 too

All the 85 126s I've seen have 4x6s in the rear as factory equipment. The fronts are most likely 3.5s set in 4x6 plates. There are a few 4x6s that will fit without modification to the speaker plate and/or the side vent ducts.

mb quart model DKD146 fits great....i have a set of those and a set of alpine 4x6s in my car....i think the mb quarts sound a little better than the alpines, they seem to play lower tones better....

also, infinity and boston acoustics make 4x6 speakers thatll fit our cars....take a look at the speakers in the link below, thats about the only 4x6 speakers that will fit...plate speakers, ones with a woofer and seperate tweeter mounted on a plate wont work without doing some cutting

I have the Boston Acoustic 4x6 plate speakers in front and back. In the front, I had to cut away some of the plastic plate section to get them to drop down correctly. In the rear, they drop right in BUT the grill won't snap down.....the speaker sits about 1/8" higher than the stock speakers apparently.

Otherwise, the BA's sound AWESOME! I was totally blown away the first time I heard them after installing them. Just need a small sub to go with the system.
