No sound, driver side speakers, 420SEL

There is no sound coming from the driver side speakers, dash and rear shelf, in 1986, 420SEL.

This audio system is the original and consists of 2 speakers in front and 2 in the rear. There is no balance switch for left and right side balancing, only the "fader" switch on the center console that allows balancing front to rear.

When this "fader wheel" is rolled forward, to power only the front speakers, I can hear a small amount of static that occurs momentarily in the left front speaker, and then there is no further noise.

When the "fader wheel" is reversed, to power only the rear speakers, there is a small amount of momentary static from the left rear speaker, and then no further noise.

If the "fader wheel" remains untouched, both left speakers remain static free and emit no sound.

I have no idea where the amplifiers are located, but have been led to believe that each speaker has its separate amp. In researching the archives, I couldn't find evidence of anyone fixing a similiar problem.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, William

With no door speakers there isn't an amplifier or amplifiers in the system other then the one in the radio. If you have the stock becker it should be a 754 and there is a balance control, it is just not obvious. If you hit the astric button (function then the bass and treble controls are left and right balance) Check this if it isn't the problem then either the fader control is only partially plugged in or the deck has an internal problem. The next thing to do is pull the deck and switch the speaker output plugs and see if the problem moves to the other side, if it does the deck is the problem, otherwise check the fader connection.... Good luck!

Scott:

Many thanks for the education, Professor. Your instructions cleared up the problem. The Becker brochure makes no mention of the information you provided and I was totally unaware that left and right side balance could be accomodated as you described. All is right with the audio again. You made my day and I thank you.

You are welcome, there are a few things that are not covered in the manuals that most people don't know about.... Just glad to help you out!
