Bruce,
Quoted from another list: -------------- You might look up RL Spencer, they have a web site, and specialize in 113 cars, and are in SF. I almost bought a car from him- a very nice erudite guy who knows the cars... --------------

I'm looking for a good mechanic to do some work on my 1973 280SEL 4.5 in Marin County, CA - the closer to Mill Valley the better. Thanks! |

Independent MB Shop in SD
I've tried Rudi's and a number of others. Rudi does acceptable work but it's VERY, VERY overpriced! If anyone's interested in details, send me Email.
The best overall quality work at a very fair price is at Exclusive Motors. Pat Petrovic is the BEST diagnostician I've ever seen. Other shops bring cars to him that they can't fix!! Exclusive Motors 8448 Miracrest Place San Diego, CA 619 552-1112 Tech: Pat Petrovic Remember to make an APPOINTMENT first! Import Motors on Telegraph and 40th in Berkeley is pretty good. They aren't cheap ($80 or $90 per hour), but they know what they are doing, and I've never been surprised with a repair bill that was any higher than their estimate. Infact, last time I was there (for replacing rear suspension accumulators in my 560SEL) came in around $450 ($100 less than the estimate). Hope this helps.

I don't know about the east bay but there are several good shops inland. The $20-$25 an hour in labor you save might make the trip worthwhile.

There are two shops in Sacramento that I would highly recomend. For a diesel, Ed Zanders at (916)487-3376. For all others up to 99 model Franks Auto at (916)452-0917. I worked their 20+ years ago and found them to be extremely honest and knowledgeable. They currently do my heavy work that I can't do anymore. This is probably to far for anything but major work. I will try to find the shop in Vacaville that some MBCA members had talked about.
Best wishes

I've been driving my '90 190E a little over 15,000 miles now, and I know, according to the manual, that it's about time for a 15k-mile service. What's in a 15k-mile service? The last place I asked said that they do only the work specified in the manual for each 15k-mile interval. Do most shops go by the manual or do some do it differently (i.e., do extra work or don't do something that is specified by the manual)? And how much can I expect to fork out? My max. is $200. The car runs superbly, and I really don't want to go about doing this, but I know it's just proper preventive maintenance. Anyhow, can anyone here recommend a good place that I can take my car to? I've been to various M-B places, but I have yet to find one that I'm comfortable with. I'm very picky! Thanks.

I concur with Bill. I have had them do work on my 350SD and my wife's 320i. Certainly timely and reasonable. Also did not rob me when my elbow broke the radiator neck on my 300E and was forced to replace the radiator (Behr radiators become brittle with age due to heat).
BTW, PartsShop.com is the way to go!! At Tom-Bend-You-Over-Benson Mercedes, they wanted $27+ for a trans. filter kit and another $19+ for the gasket; "oh and by the way you will need this seal and that seal, a brass washer..." I purchased the trans. filter "kit", (2) oil filters, new valvecover gasket and 2nd day air for less than picking it up locally was going to cost. Support PartsShop!!
