Clogged fuel tank - strainer - WVO gunk
I pulled out my strainer after pumping out the fuel tank through
![]() Pulled hose off of tube and drained tank + fuel line, about 4 gallons into clean 5 gallon bucket. But there will be more. Luckily I was able to unscrew the strainer with the fuel line fitting instead of using a 1 13/16 or 42mm socket. I did try a large WP pliers and a 15" Diamond adjustable wrench, not even close to loosen. Tried 3/4" wrench on fuel fitting, strainer loosened! ![]() It will dump all over the axle and differential area and you. Be prepared I had a stubby 3 gallon bucket and almost filled it up as the clogged strainer was holding back A LOT of fuel !!! Less than a minute cleaning with a tooth brush and GASOLINE the strainer was absolutely clean. I reached my finger around (2") the bottom rim of the tank and it was really clean, no gunk. Added 2 gallons of gas to tank AND flushed 1 gallon back though fuel inlet fuel line, which I will leave in for a week then flush out. I still can drive as the car has 2 fuel tanks. Actually 3 I have my small diesel purge/cleaning tank on now. Damn glad I did it, now I have to do it on my SD. See other posts for a picture of the classic gunked out strainer, mine was the same. Does anyone know if I can cut off the hose and use 5/16 biodiesel hose on the original strainer fitting??? It looks like a hose crimped on a barbed fitting. |

Yes.
(In the interest of brevity,'will concede to the subject vehicle being produced by
Mercedes Benz...can you say "Leap of Faith") [You are still subject to all BC warnings and prohibitions] You may be able to "UnCrimp" the flange of the fitting with "Aviation Snips" and R+R the hose with Bio"D"compliant line. Other "Mod Gods" have successfully complete this upgrade using SS hose clamp on the fitting. Pictures of Strainer to Metallic Hard Line 1985 300D:

5/16 should work. use the good fuel injection line clamps.
did you really put gasoline in there, or was that a miscue?

Yes you can cut the crimp fitting off. There is a normal barb underneath. Then you'll want 5/16" hose.

I used gas to clean out the tank. When I remove it from the tank it will be filtered and added to 50 gals of WVO.
You betcha |

Mercedes Source has a larger screen and fuel hose so wvo will flow better. When animal protiens are filtered out by cold filtering, less chicken skin will occur on tank walls leading to clogged screens.Really if you can find a plastic or fiberglass tank for your wvo.

Just for the record, here's a method for emptying the fuel tank that avoids a diesel shower:
Emptying the fuel tank Even easier if you have a second tank into which you can pump the fuel.

When the strainer is clogged you can still have 3" of fuel in the bottom of the tank.
That's why I used a 12v fuel pump through the filler neck. I also jacked up the dr side when pumping and pass side when I removed the hose, strainer. |
