WVO Filter funnel idea

I've seen lots of ingenious ideas for filtering WVO, but has anyone thought of using a bottle from a water cooler? I would think you could just cut the end out and attatch filter sock to the bottom or big filter bag to the top and have an instant 5 gallon funnel - just stick it in the top of your barrel and pour. Five gallons at a time, no muss, no fuss. Any ideas? Anyone tried it?

People have tried it, but it doesn't work all that well unless you have a way to keep the filter bag from touching the sides of the bottle. If you had maybe wire mesh that you could form a basket for the bag, then it might work ok. A sock at the end would work too, but again you'd have to have some way to keep the sock from stretching, otherwise you won't be filtering at the rated micron level.

I've seen it on one of the WVO websites-frybrid, infopop, greasecar, not so much on a mercedes forum, though.

doing just that.only...using a 12" long By 7" pening with a metal ring.cut a 5.5 inch hole in flat bottom of jug...cut small hole(big enough for bottle mouth) in a 5 gallon bucket and pour away.been using a 50 micron as my initial filter after pick-up.gotta clean them frequently or they slow down quite a bit due to fat exclusion.working on a larger, more volume friendly system.happy fitering!!!

15 gallon Ag. chemical drums can be had for free or low $ at most dairy farms. With a normal sock filter, they can hold 8 gallons. Using the handle, I can easily pour the filtered oil out of the bung hole without removing the filter.
I still use this for quick batches or if the bigger unit is full or filters are dirty.
My larger unit is a converted chest freezer. Insulated, top opens ... I make the tray style filters from Wally World fleece (5 microns) and they hold 1-2 cubies. A water bed heater heats the oil to 98*F & if modified, to 135*F. I use this freezer for filtering, settling, processing, washing ... cheap (free)!
