280se 3.5 coupe, only 12.8 K miles on her!
Too beautiful this one! - I can't sleep at night. Somebody on this Forum please buy this car! Its not broken in and some fool might buy her and try putting her thru the daily grind as a freeway commuter (perish the thought!)

280SE Coupe, Not A 3.5
Check the engine, 6 cyl. Check the grill, it's a regular high and narrower grill that the 3.5.

I sent him an e-mail and he replied that he is selling for his aunt. He's not an MB guy. We should invite him here for the discussion or to the heckflosse homepage at least.
I don't think there is any fraud but the trunk lid shouldn't have a 3.5 on it which would be first test. With that few miles, as shown anyway, it should command a high price.

This is a very nice car.
It's sad that it is so badly misrepresented - almost with the appearance of fraud. I also do not understand why such a car would not go to one of the established dealers, and why he is doing a private auction. Just doesn't feel right.

I think the reason is quite simple -- the seller is an estate sale professional and in my years of going to estate sales, I will make a couple of sweeping generalizations:
a) they usually know a lot about a few things they sell, and virtually nothing about most things b) they usually know nothing about the subtle distinctions between cars (I once saw a but-ugly RR Corniche Coupe that the guy was trying to get a convertible price for) c) selling to a dealer usually involves either a commission or a sale for less than retail, either of which involves the free surrender or cash. I don't blame the guy for trying to sell it himself. By the way, can you really tell what engine a car has by the shape of the grill? If the car was in a front-end accident, couldn't the shop have put the wrong grill on? Just curious... Catrinus 73 280C

You misundertand my comment.
I was not accusing the agent of fraud, only lamenting that such a fine and rare car is presented in such a way that potential buyers either think it to be fraud ("they can't be that dumb") or a joke ("they really are that dumb"). And I think that a respected dealer would probably be able to move the car for a price that would put more money in the estate's pocket than this guy with his e-Bay sale. Don't forget, he isn't doing this for free.

Something smells bad here, I saw a picture of the engine when the item was listed initially (last night) now the seller withdrew the photo, when asked why here is his reply:
"Hi there, The picture was to blurry, and everyone wanted better pictures, I just found out now I can't re-list pictures after people bid on it. I listed it prior to EBAY update on Friday a.m. and now I have over 60 emails" Dieseldiehard

The engine picture is gone. he rear pic says it all.
I did e-mail him. He replied back with a list of cars and the 3.5 coupe specs in red. I replied that the pic showed a 6 cyl and a reference to the Heckflosse homepage and a wed site with the MB USA cars detailed. So why doesn't the guy put the VIN or chassis number down? That would be the ultimate determination.

Beware also in regard to lesser items:
Within the past two weeks there have been two separate sets of Bundt Cake rims which have been advertised as 15" (very rare and valuable, as you know) when they were actually the common 14", and both sellers claimed, when contacted by email, that they just hadn't bothered to measure when they posted the auctions. There are also a lot of wheels offered by people who measure the width over the outside of the flanges rather than between the beadseats and claim that this is the proper way to do it, in spite of the factory markings to the contrary.

I just sent the following email:
Hello -
My name is Charles Taylor, and I am a serious collector of Mercedes coupes. The car that you currently have on e-Bay is very unusual and desirable. But there are some discrepancies that are disturbing: 1. Every 3.5 I have seen has the emblem on the right side of the trunk lid 2. I believe that the cars with the 3.5 are "low grille" models, which this car is not. From the pictures, the car appears to be a six-cylinder model. Still very unusual, but not nearly as collectible as the 3.5 V8 model. Can you provide the full VIN number and engine number to verify that this is indeed an original 3.5? Thank you.

Now it's a V6
I see he's now updated the site to state that it's a V6 !!! and he'd recieved over 130 e-mails telling him it was not a V8. You just gotta wonder is it really that hard to just pop the hood and see what's in there? Or are there people out there that are so mechanically ignorant they dont know the difference between a V and an inline configuration?

Yes there are lots of mechanically ignorant car sellers, some pros some normal people that don't even know where their brake fluid reservoir is.
I have to give the seller a shadow of the doubt, he is trying hard, and after my suggestion to revise the engine description did so even if not cognizant of a V6 vs inline six. I wonder about his auntie, did she have the car serviced regularly? If it really has these few miles on it then it obviously sat most of its life with the engine getting crudded up, rusting etc. and the rings probably getting varnish in them. If she drove it every Sunday then its gotta be a real find! The body has great intrinsic value as far as it appears on the jpgs which BTW are nothing to applaud. (did anyone get a VIN# yet?)
