Did anyone read the 280SE 3.5 Restoration article in the new Star magazine?
 

Robert Platz writes, "Once convinced that the frame and body are essentially square, I often begin the restoration of a 111 convertible, especially a V8, looking for irregularities in the sightline curvature of the quarters above the rear wheel wells."

Ann writes, "Once I've convinced my husband that there is room for yet another Mercedes at our house, I try to find one that is not rusting entirely into bits and actually runs."

Seriously, I admire Mr. Platz's efforts and attention to detail, but alas, I'd be afraid to drive that car and have a bug splat on it : )

What a beautiful car.

I've always been in love the W111 convertible, and with the exception of the 600, it's really the last of the MBs that truly exude the handcrafted appearance.

A true classic MB, and while expensive, probably worth it!

The article was, in my opinion, useless,
 

at least to the average guy who has a vintage car. More importantly, rather than address the specifics of the restoration of that car, which would have been really interesting, he focused on what his great ;) shop would do with unlimited funds to a theoretical W111 convertible car he had in for restoration. It just seemed like a big advertisement to me. Flame away!

No flame - agreed.

I don't disagree with the thought it might be a thinly disguised ad for Mr. Platz's mad skills as a restorer.

But - the attention to detail and the info was fascinating. If I was going to read an article about a guy who restores cars to better than they were when they left factory OR follow Britney's exploits on TMZ.com - I'd read the article about MB restoration any time.

...and agree that Platz got a nice pop for his business.

I would have liked to have seen before pictures, as I suspect this car was likely nicer than what most of us have now.....

Also thought the note about the rear fenders pulling in over the years was noteworthy.

Back in 1974-76, I rented a garage for my 64 Lincoln Convertible, and the car in the next stall was a 69 280SE cab. Champaigne with a brown top and tobacco leather. Man, I loved than car. Owner was a local dentist, and he kept the car in the garage during the day, while at work.

Not the big picture, the inset one. You can tell its mine because the MA inspection sticker is still on the window.
