W124 Fender Modification?
 

Was thinking of trying this fender mod to a 92 400E to accomodate larger tyres. Has ayone ever done the Conversion to 235/45 R 17 tyres and 8 J x 17 H 2 ET 28 disk wheel on a W124? If so any tips? What size spacers did you use between the fenders?

What fender mod? Do you mean stacking washers so the fender is further out? Then it won't align with the bumper and front door. Get yourself a set of 500E front fenders. It's not easy to fit 500E rear fenders but you can't stack washers to push out the rear fenders either.

Not sure if this is really worth all the trouble? Has anyone tried this?

Actually, a few members on this forum have done this...

...it will solve your fender lip clearance when using oversized tires, but you still have the issue of steering "lock-to-lock" clearance...that is, depending on rim offset, your tires WILL rub the inner panels when you steer or corner hard.

You could just roll the fender as said above. Get a tool like the one below.

AMG used polyurethane "spacers" to increase fender displacement and longer fender bolts to accomodate the slightly wider rims they used in the 80's. There are some of these kits available from time to time on Ebay, but the effect could be acheived with a stack of washers. The effect is modest, but might be just enough, depending on the wheel width.

Did AMG ever make a fender spaceing kit for the W124? Here is a pic of a kit for the W201. If so anyone know where I might find one for sale? Already checked the e-bay, no luck there.

I still don’t understand why there will not be any gaps or misalignments. Could you guys explain this a little more? I might give it a try and contact someone with the parts, if I could better understand how they work.

I currently have 205/55/16 tires mounted on AMG 16 x 7.5 ET37 rims and they do not rub, but I want to try 225/50/16 and there is a good chance they will rub the lower plastic panels on my 1995 E320. The AMG spacers or a stack of washers might do the trick, but I just don’t understand why there would not be gaps somewhere. Please help me understand.
