Surplus Humvees For Sale
and you don't have to be a police department!
US Army Will Start Selling Surplus Humvees to the Public Starting Tomorrow Obviously these retired vehicles aren’t in perfect condition, most having been built between 1987 and 1994. They have anywhere from 1,361 to 38,334 miles of military service, carrying everything from troops to equipment. Before any of these Humvees is auctioned, they will be inspected for any significant defects and stripped of any "military characteristics." That means no body armor or mounted 50 caliber machine guns. Sorry, militia guys. The new owners will be responsible for arranging transportation within three days of the sale, and no titles will be offered. Buyers must also sign documents that explain how they plan to use their new toy ![]() |

Awesome! I thought they were going the way of the M-151 MUTT (scrapper's torch) due to lack of proper road safety equipment. Glad to hear that the safety nancies didn't win this round.
This being said, the HMMWV is still a pretty crude, nasty design -- I mean, what genius thought that hanging a big, hulking V-8 diesel motor between the front seats (giving a vehicle the width of a motorhome with the front seating room of a Lotus Elise) was a good idea? Military gear tends to be bulky and unwieldy. Why didn't they design it with a straight-6 diesel placed upright or a boxer engine placed flat? I can understand the merit of an engine between the axles, but the choice of wide engine seems bizarre. Especially considering that it was designed in the early 1980s, when fighting in German cities with narrow streets was a concern on the table. |

Having worked on them in the military, I will not be bidding on any of this batch.

More than one of my military friends has said the exact same thing. I think it would be a neat idea for these to go to some more rural fire depts to help with remote situations. Sent from an abacus

I'm actually not convinced that they'd be good in remote situations. Too wide/heavy for trail use, and for truly remote situations, they usually attack the fire with aircraft anyway. If fire depts wanted the things, they'd have acquired some ten years ago. |

![]() Those rural departments better sweeten the deal with headhunting some repair personnel right out of the military. Ive worked on a few of them too, and they are not fun to repair. Plus, they are pretty cramped inside unbelievably. Just imagine 4 seats at 4 corners of a dining room table someone might be standing on to fire a weapon.

Actually the military has a program for regular replacement of the 6.5 diesels in the Humvees. Ted's Engines in Alabama sells the takeout engines and they have a reputation for selling good engines.

Junk. This equipment has been left to rot in motor pools for years upon years unless any "class 3" leaks were noticed by anyone who care.
This equipment will require some serious maintiance to get in opperating condition, but, realisticly, what are they good for? No passenger room. No real cargo room. Great towing? Good offroad ability? (scratch that, they're not "great" offroad, no better than a wrangler) No reason for them to be used, honestly, who can put them to use? They're junk. Always have been. Always will be. Antiquated and valueless. Anybody who's driven one of theese knows. But, they do look badass kinda. If I had 10k to throw away (plus another 5k for repairs), I'd buy a different platform. ~Nate

I've driven a civilian one off-road. The real benefit is the central tire inflation, the weight distribution and ability to drive it off a cliff, and the ground clearance with independent. The lockers were cool, but how hard is that to put in a jeep.
The width is nice for stability. I've gotten one pretty damn sideways. With all the gearing they have a low top speed. The get sh** for mileage. But you can play solitaire on the center console. However, I want one with bulletproof glass. Lol. Just in case. |

Not always.
I got a 1986 G30 box truck with 42K for 1,625 and a 1993 G30 for 2550. Both needed only filter and oil changes. I did have to replace the transcooler on omne, because it had been removed before the pick-up, but they are both still running now. No they are not a E300, but the certainly do the job. Some vehicles are auctioned because they no longer fit the fleet.
