Torture has not kept us safer -- au contraire
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/28/AR2008112802242_pf.html
excerpt: I learned in Iraq that the No. 1 reason foreign fighters flocked there to fight were the abuses carried out at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Our policy of torture was directly and swiftly recruiting fighters for al-Qaeda in Iraq. The large majority of suicide bombings in Iraq are still carried out by these foreigners. They are also involved in most of the attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. It's no exaggeration to say that at least half of our losses and casualties in that country have come at the hands of foreigners who joined the fray because of our program of detainee abuse. Video interview on FOX.

What torture? You mean the media-generated non-event?

You deny that the US has used torture?

Somewhere there is a line between what is and isn't torture. I don't know where that line is, but I believe that the Bush administration has allowed, or even directed, agents of our government to be on the wrong side of that line in recent years.
Your question seems to imply that all this talk about torture is a "media-generated non-event." Therefore I assume that you have a definition of torture and believe that we have not engaged in torture to any significant degree. Perhaps you could elaborate, because that position seems contrary to the evidence I've seen. |

The definition changes if we are doing it to them or if they are doing it to us.

The definition varies according to political and social views.

![]() I'd say 3 and 4 in the first part describe water boarding and the Gitmo high fidelity, air conditioned treatment.

Would you agree that in using a dictionary, the first definition is preferred to the subsequent definitions and the last definition is the least widely accepted?

Just an observation- the dictionary doesn't use the word involuntary any where in its description.

Denial may not be a river but it runs deep. If we torture, we confirm their every suspicion about us and prompt them to tell lies to make it stop.
If we treat them with decency and respect, it confuses them and makes them wonder if they've been lied to about us. My take, anyway.

I did not vote for John McCain, but I think he knows a thing or two about torture.
He thinks we should abide by the geneva convention. I agree with him.
