The African-American community put alot of presure on Sambos to change the name of their restraurant. They claimed it was racist... even though the place depicted a light brown little boy with a turban on his head that looked more Indian (from India) than anything else.

People can be so hypersensitive... to the point of being ridiculous!

Was the name a reference to the story Little Black Sambo that I heard as a kid?

That OLD story, that is a popular childrens fable is in no way degrading to blacks. Don't you remember it...? I do. It was cute. Not at all racist.

Childrens stories should involve all races of people, don't you think?

This is a dim memory for me, but Sambo was pretty darn smart; he outmaneuvered the tigers who wanted to eat him.

There was still a Sambo's Restaurant on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as late as the spring of 1981; my second wife-to-be and I ate there on a weekend getaway. Great pancakes, as I recall.

A pretty accurate assessment:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Black_Sambo

The story was fine (and yes, Sambo was of East Indian descent in the original story). It was the illustrations that were the problem, as well as the pirated copies that were distributed. I'm not sure how "Sambo" got its racial overtones, but that happened far earlier than the Sambo restaurants emerged. So it would be no surprise that the restaurant name would go under scrutiny.

There used to be a restaurant in Arlington called Whitey's. I don't think there was ever any concern about that name having racial overtones.

As usual, people trying to make something out of nothing!

The original Sambo's is where I grew up in Santa Barbara Ca.

Only if Whites complained...now why doesn't anyone complain about "Cracker Barrel"?

Frontier Airlines won't take cash for booze...

Anyone remember the names or two-letter prefixes for telephone exchanges?

VW bugs, a very rare sight. W123's almost all gone, except for the occasional sighting of a rust bucket.

Do you have to be a cracker to eat there? Is a "cracker barrel" anything akin to a barrel of monkeys?

I do. We used to be JA 59712. We were on a partyline for a while, too. You might pick up the phone and hear one of your neighbors chattering away.
