Oxygen sensor smoking?
I just took delivery of my project 1986 560SL yesterday. It runs fantastic when its cold and even when its hot, sometimes..... I noticed when i ran it the first time last night it looked as if the O2 sensor was smoking. There was a bunch of oil and crud on it plus the car was sitting so i figured whatever and cleaned the crud off. Today while doing a brief spin on the freeway and around the neighborhood it lost all power and at a stop light the right side of the car was smoking, looked like something was on fire etc. The sensor itself was smoking again. I ordered a new O2 sensor just in case. Ive been working on cars for 20+years now and never experienced that.
Also, where does the O2 sensor plug into? Theres a rubber grommet where it passes through the sheetmetal and i havent tracked down where it plugs into. Thanks |

It plugs into the control unit located under a plastic panel beneath the right side front carpet.

Under the seat or where the passengers feet are?

Although the effort is substantial, removing the carpet will answer the question.

I found it. There’s a hugeplastic panel with the ECU etc hiding behind it. Thank you. Hopefully the new o2 fixes everything. It will be here Wednesday I think.
