380SL ignition switch problem?

I would appreciate some help with my problem. My son took the 1982 380SL for a spin and turned off the engine after arriving at his desination. It refused to start after that. We've only had the car one year and it has been pretty nice for short drives with the top down.

Anyway, I purchased a start solenoid and will replace it this weekend. I wonder if the ignition switch might be the problem, though. All indications are good. Good battery, lights, dash lights, etc. Nothing goes dim whem turning the key. The starter just does not engage.

The solenoid typically wears out over time and you experience the clicking sounds due to the poor connection. This problem happened without warning. That is why I think it may be something other than the solenoid.

Is there a switch between the key and starter? Also, could the ignition switch be worn out?

Larry K.
