Heater Core

I have to pull the climate control unit to replace a leaking evap on my dads 85 300d, but I think its a good idea to change the heater core as well while we are there. Im not having much luck finding one, does anyone know of a place to get one? Should I even bother?

You will have to remove the dash and the climate control box to get to the evaporator.

Take a look at this post, some good picture here that might help

How common are heater core failures on these cars? I just called a few dealers and they are NLA...

I think they galvanically corrode when the wrong coolant is in the car (a W123 I have), I've also had one puke on my feet when a head gasket let go (on a W201). Seems like the pressure cap should have vented so IDK if it was already gone or what.

I've heard on a W123, you can leave the dash in and just pull the console, etc, then the heater box. When I've done it, it was dash out tho.

A couple few years ago, a batch of new ones (non OEM) went up on ebay, about $70, and I got one.

Thanks, Ill keep my eyes out for them just in case. Can anyone confirm that you can remove the HC just by pulling the console?

I really cant imagine pulling the heater core with the dash in place. It might be possible though, if you can find the clips that hold the case together and maneuver it through the opening where the console was. Honestly I would suggest pulling the dash. Once you have the center console and all the switches and controls in it out, you are half way to pulling the dash anyway. It's really not that bad to pull a dash, its held in with a few bolts once you take the speaker covers and kick panels off, plus you need to pull the instrument cluster and steering wheel. That gives you a good chance to replace or rebuild all the vacuum pods, and you can pull the whole evap housing to clean/replace it.
