Right on! I'm glad everything is rolling right along!
I had Greazzer install a set of monark nozzle on a set of injectors that I pulled out of the yard. The new nozzles are very smooth and evened out throttle response considerably, not cheap, but worth the investment. I could mail the stock ones I pulled from my rig to you (for the price of shipping) if you needed a set to ship in for cores. It saves on the downtime, just pass 'em on to the next fellow if you are interested. (Steamup looks pretty interesting...) |

Thank you for the offer! I may well take you up on that.
Had an odd exchange at the fuel pump this morning. I was waiting for the attendant to come over(we're too stupid to pump our own fuel in Oregon) and someone in a jacked up F350 dually with what looked to be nearly 40" tires yelled at me for parking in the diesel spot. Actually getting red in the face and using profanity and telling me to quit blocking the diesel pump so he could fill up. He didn't like my calm response that I was buying diesel, I got here first, he could wait his turn. Screamed that it was impossible, that Toyota didn't make diesels, I was wasting his time and going to ruin my truck at the same time. He kept making snide comments the whole time I was fueling. I was happy to get done and get out of there. What the hell is wrong with people these days?

Hilarious!
Here in Washington I had a fellow with a little Honda getting ready to fuel up. I just asked politely if he would mind backing up so I could get to the diesel pump. He was happy to move and we also got to chat "truck" a bit! Don't worry there are good folk out there too, it's just that a select few folks are LOT LOUDER about their little problems! |

Got a bit of a clatter on cold startup between certain RPMs, goes away once the engine is warm. Reading other posts on here and the symptoms I have, looks like my injectors are toast. 280k miles on them, almost certainly original. It started when I last fueled up, so I was thinking dodgy fuel, but a good dosing of ATF and cetane boost hasn't helped anything at all. Plan is to drive it home after work, park it, and dive into the injector threads here.
Cadin, once I get some $$$ saved up, it looks like I'll be taking you up on your injector offer. Thank you all.

Times are tough! This is the fun I found on my rig...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvRJcM5tbFw As far as the injectors go, you can have mine; I only paid ~$25 for the whole set at pick-n-pull; just pass 'em on for the same when you get yours rebuilt! Mine worked fine, only a little hesitant on the low end; so they should last until you can save the cash. Just PM me your mailing address.

Cadin-
That's a heck of an offer! Thank you! I decided to dip into savings, I'll be sending my injectors to Greazzer as soon as I get them yanked. I'll take before and after video and will hopefully be able to show a significant difference between new and old injectors. As the truck has been undriveable, I've been making huge strides on the flatbed as well. I should be bolting it down tomorrow.

A little clatter on startup and at idle is a sign the pump is perfectly adjusted for maximum power and fuel efficiency. Too quiet at idle is not the best sign.

Most ive run into at the pump have been relatively curious or friendly, none so upset as that. A few semi drivers were miffed when ive been in a single pump line, but thats about it. They always calmed right dkwn when they realized the vehicle was diesel. Need to get mine running again

Pictures are of the yanked injectors that will be getting sent off for rebuilding tomorrow, and current progress on the flatbed. The gray painted boards going across are just set there to give an idea of how it'll look when it's done, they still need to be bolted down as well. I still need to bolt the flat bed frame to the truck frame, wash + paint any areas on the frame that look like they need it, bolt down the gray top boards, mount + wire up lighting, mount exhaust, and mount fuel filler.

No worries, brother, glad to help!
Your diesel adventures crack me up, I also like how you never seem to retort at these folks, which is what most would do; and is likely a waste of time! The prius owners really crack me up, since I am in the 'Couv there are a lot of folks here that want to be seen as more "progressive" than Portland, so they get peer pressured into it. No one ever seems to mention where the rare earth metal come from in their "green" car, and that the only place in the US that used to mine them got shut down for ecological concerns. (According to the web - "A standard Prius has 22-33 pounds of Lanthanum in the battery and another 2.2 pounds of Neodymium in the electric motor.") Ever seen the Doritos in the snack machine labelled "Smart Choices made Easy!"? Same phenomenon; label Cod as Crabmeat and watch it sell! ...But I digress. I like the flatbed! If you can get some old ammo cans cheap they are nice to bolt under the bed sideways for chains/road tools/etc P.S. Bonus Questions: Does Baby Jesus even need a jimmy? Does the rear-view mirror even work in a prius with that bar in the way? Do penguins need snowshoes?

What's the story with this one?
![]() The others look dryer. Here come the questions - that could very have been answered earlier in the thread but seriously I've got a bad memory and the thread is just too damn long to search for the answers now! When did you last change the valve stem seals? How do the glow plugs look when they're removed? Have you removed the exhaust manifold recently? How much oil are you using? (Do you see where I'm going with this? => was it just a drippy injector or was it something else...)

There's just not much point in getting upset. Doesn't solve problems or move forward and it's not going to change the other person's opinion in the slightest. And in general, when dealing with crazies, LEAVING is usually the best bet. I've got a few ammo cans around, and a padlock can be added to them fairly easily. I'll definitely be adding some under-bed storage. Quote:
I have never replaced the valve stem seals - I have only put about 5k miles on the engine. Going by memory, I do remember some GP's being wet when removed. Exhaust manifold was off ~5k miles ago. I remember it being dry inside, with a good bit of soot but no serious carbon. Oil use is very little, less than 1/4 quart in 5k miles, and I know I'm leaking a small amount.

Well that background information about the pictures changes it a bit! It might be a good idea to get in touch with the re-builder and ask if they are leaking in their current unbuilt state.

You can always baffle the Prius owners with facts.
1) Diesels are not "dirty". In fact, they are very low in HC and CO emissions with a trade-off of somewhat higher NoX. The particulate matter (PM) which most folks think is "soot" is really just carbon that falls harmlessly to the ground. (It is, however, accompanied with non-particulate bound organics which are carcinogenic but don't confuse her with that). 2) Her Prius has approximately the same environmental impact as a Hummer when assessed using a life-cycle (cradle-to-grave) yardstick, which is the only way to accurately assess environmental impact. To build a Hybrid you have to essentially build 2 drive packages in one body and the electrical part takes HUGE resources including a lot of copper, nickel, and other very "dirty" metals. Oh, and there is no technology to recycle her nickel-metal-hydride batteries even though the manufacturer is required to "recycle" them - so they're being stored in warehouses for now. No one knows WHAT will happen to them in the future. So you are actually more environmentally aware than she is. That said, don't be too hard on her. Prius buyers MEAN well but lack the information to actually understand the issues involved. Because they don't know what they don't know they fall back on fuel economy as the only measure of environmental impact - sad, really. Dan |
