The injectors are exactly as they were when I bought the engine. Haven't had time to do any more diagnostics.

It's done!
Short version: Got her purring again. Er, rattling again. Long version: Checked for obviously disconnected or broken/loose wires. All looked good. Took a test light to the glow plugs while they were on - all receiving power. Removed power connections and checked resistance of all the plugs. Four tested good, one was completely open, infinite resistance. Yanked that one, applied power, no glowy glowy. We have snow forecast for this coming week, I wanted my 4x4 on the ready line - no time to wait for an online order to get here. Got lucky, Autozone had Bosch in stock. Got it installed and she fired right up like normal. I'll order the remaining four plugs online and swap the rest when they come in. A couple of the old but still functioning plugs will get tossed in the spare parts bin and a couple will go with the spare fuel filters carried on the truck. Also yanked the front driver's wheel. Bearings are fine, it's definitely the wear indicator on the brakes that are making the noises. I bent the wear indicator tab out of the way so it won't sound horrible, and will order parts tomorrow. That's my diesel adventures for the weekend. Now I'm off to look up what a good maintenance-replacement interval is for glow plugs.

And another update, I have another glow plug out. Either that same one failed very quickly or another one has bit the dust. I just bought 5 more, will be testing with a multimeter when I get off work. And probably buying a magnetic block heater.

Tested the newly replaced plug on break, tests fine. Truck started normally. Go figure.
When I get time I'll replace the four older plugs and keep the old ones as spares.

Definitely have another bad GP. Truck started on four cylinders this morning at ~21 deg F w/ no block heat and ran pretty rough until that last cylinder lit. It was like living one of those diesel locomotive cold start videos.
At lunch I'll bust out the multimeter and replace the offending plug, and then any others I have time to do before clocking back in. This evening they will definitely all get replaced. Thanks for your patience, everyone. I'm sure listening to my minor issues and giving newby advice again and again and again gets old.

Got the rest of the GP's replaced. Starts like a warm spring day now. Went and (ahem) test drove it in the snow. Lots of fun downshifting, punching it, and watching that thick black cloud against the white snow.

Continued to start just fine and handled 8-10" snow like nothing.
The more I drive this thing, the happier I am with the conversion. We got a 3-4" more after the pic was taken.

Update:
Finally got around to messing with some vacuum solenoids for a shut-down system. I have two from the Toyota emissions controls that will work, they are normally-open(pass vacuum) when de-energized and closed when energized. I'll wire them up so that they energize with the key on and block vacuum from reaching the shut-down port, and when I turn off the key they will de-energize and pass vacuum to the shut down port. Hopefully there will be enough vacuum in the system to shut down the engine, the electric vacuum pump having also turned off with the key. A larger reservoir might be necessary. I'll also put a small leak in the hose leading to the vacuum shutoff from the shutoff valve, large enough for air to bleed back in and allow the engine to restart, but small enough that it won't interfere with the operation of the vacuum shutoff. No more sucking on a tube! Ordered the adjustable vacuum switch with hysteresis from EVparts. Should be here in the next day or two, EVparts is only a couple hours up the road from me. My current vacuum switch is from a hot rod company and interestingly enough is also designed for this exact application, but has no hysteresis. It causes the relay to cycle a LOT and the pump to bounce on and off repeatedly after it turns off. Also have front brake pads and rear shoes on their way in and have decided to just go with a magnetic block heater. The cord on my in-block one is giving me fits.

By golly what luxury to be able to shut off the engine with the key instead of sucking on a tube. Kicking myself, been driving for months that way, I had the parts to do the job all along, and it took less than an hour. If my garage was more organized, it would have taken less time than that.

Got the vacuum switch from EV parts installed today, no more bouncing of the vacuum pump.
I'll keep posting updates on the engine and any conversion tidying-up I do, but for the most part the work from here on out won't have much to do with MBZ diesel engines and won't really be applicable to this forum. Thank you all for your help. It has very truly been appreciated. If there's an MBZ meetup in the area I'd like to stop by and shake some hands. I'm at the Antique Powerland Great Oregon Steamup every year and will be taking the Yota conversion this year. Would love to see some other MBZ people there. Hopefully I can give back to the forum what you folks have given to me.
