I'll do the O-rings and verify that oil is staying in the oil filter housing after shutdown. I do get 90psi oil pressure on the gauge within 1/4 second of starting(cold), and the rattling does continue after there's pressure on the gauge, so I'm pretty sure that's not a huge part of it. When it's warm at idle it'll only have 15-20psi and it doesn't rattle then. Pressure goes right back up as soon as it gets above idle.

I'm anxious to do another compression test. This new starter cranks a LOT faster, I bet my compression numbers are a LOT better now.
Hmmm any evidence of wear on the camshaft and followers? Spray bar nice and free of junk?

(And you are sure it is drive train rattle and not injectors?)

Thanks for the replies, folks.

This is the first diesel I've owned, and the first MBZ diesel I've had any experience with at all, though I've driven several thousand miles in both a 7.3L Ford and an 8.3L Cummins. For all I know, this clatter could be completely normal for these engines when cold.

I really think I just need to take it to an experienced MBZ mechanic, have them keep it over night, and have a listen in the morning when they fire it up cold. It could be just fine. The noise goes away when the engine warms up.

Thanks Stretch!

No signs of wear on the cam lobes or followers, spray bar spraying freely.

There's a decent amount of rattle from the transmission that goes away when I push the clutch pedal. When I cold-start the engine, whether the clutch is in or not, I hear the rattle.

It might be injectors, what's the best way to check that?

If I were you I'd listen to a few you tube videos for injector nailing and see if that compares with the sound you hear.

Searching for

whunter injector nailing site:peachparts.com

in google comes up with several tortuous routes to youtube videos!

Just a progress update:

I tried to check out Whunter's videos, marked private! Whoops!

Got two gallons of Delo 400 5w-40 synthetic sitting in the cab of the truck right now, going to change the oil and filter tomorrow.

Still need to get a block heater cord, unless someone has a spare sitting around they'd sell?

I also have a stock 300SD alternator for sale/trade.

And lastly, last mileage calculation was 21mpg, down from 24 when I first started driving it. Not sure what all is going on. As I get more faith in the conversion and learn to go ahead and rev this thing, I think my right foot has gotten heavier. My best buddy is a truck driver and says his mileage has taken a slight hit too, he thinks the fuel distributors have switched to winter fuel.

The noise is probably injectors, everyone told me I had a bent rod...until it warmed up and I put "new" rebuild injectors in

Latest update!

I used air brake hose for the power steering return lines - it was what was available. Found out that air brake lines don't like constant contact with ATF/power steering fluid. 2500 miles and the fluid started seeping and sweating straight through the hose. Replacing the return line with transmission cooler line. It should handle ATF just fine!

Ummm make sure you get any bits of rubber out of the power steering system

(and are you actually a scientist?)

No worries, I got it loooooooooong before the hose started actually coming apart. Soon as I saw it was having issues I stopped driving it.

I'm not a scientist, just mad. As in nuts. "Crazy sales rep" doesn't have the same ring to it. Maybe Frankentruck builder?

My girlfriend nicknamed the truck Sid, from that kid in Toy Story that liked to take toys apart and put them back together in odd combinations. Pterodactyl head on a doll's body, etc. It suits.........

Edit: Alas, fuel prices have gone back to normal-ish. Diesel is $3.89/gal, premium unleaded is $3.59/gal. Back to daily driving the Mr2, as it gets better fuel economy on less expensive fuel.

Just an update.

Got the power steering return lines replaced. So far so good.

Changed the oil and filter, now running Delo 5w-40 synthetic. Holy cow what a difference! Idles so much smoother when cold, noticeably more power when cold, etc. I can also report that my anti-drainback valve is working, the filter housing was full when I cracked the top off, draining quickly when I broke the seal.

Pulled into a different fuel station than usual today. "Sir, that's a diesel pump, you can't fill your truck there." Took a bit to get them to listen to me, they just kept repeating, "Move forward to a gas pump, move forward to a gas pump." For a bit I didn't think they were going to sell me fuel. Kind of rude, there's a reason they're not my usual station.

Coldest start yet this morning, 25 degrees. Didn't actually need to go anywhere, was just curious if it would start at this temp with no block heater.

Glowed for a good long time and she started right up.

Darned if there wasn't something I was going to ask you folks about that I can't remember now.

Yepper, mine fires right up with the synthetic as well! (Also gives me some assurance that this is better than the 15w-40 dino, at least for winter dry starts!)

I just had this same experience at one of those truck highway diesel pumps, where the island is 500 yards from the building. Guy turned off the pump, walked way over there to get it turned on, came back out to a mouthy trucker asking why I was blocking the pump.

We both need to install diesel badging
