Questions: Oil Type & Antifreeze type

Ok -- a couple of questions please...

Reminder - I was away from the MB Diesel family for many years, but have returned....

MY QUESTIONS: for my 85 300SD, I'm planning an oil change this weekend -- Being that I'm in the HD Truck and Commercial vehicle industry, I hear very good things about Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40 Diesel Motor oil in heavy trucks (NON SYN) - I'm thinking about using ----Does anyone have experience, thoughts or feedback?

Next Question: What is the proper Antifreeze? Looking at using the Zerex G-05 (Yellow) as it's listed for HD diesel engines....Any experience, thoughts or feedback?

Thanks for your help and advice...

Oil choice is very personal.

Use Zerex G-05 or MB coolant.

And try the Search function!

Yeah, your opening a can of worms with that one.

The one thing that almost everyone can agree on is change it hot & change it often!

Zerex G-05 is fine.

For oil- Do a search, you'll find many, many threads where people state their opinion (and argue). Get ready for a thread about 5-25 pages long!

Zerex G05 or Mercedes factory coolant is what almost everyone seems to use.

Now remember what we learned in Kindergarten - No fighting, play nice! Didn't mean to open the can of worms -- but was really curious to get input from the experts -

This SD (haven't named yet) has service records back to 145,000 miles....It now has 198,000 - so in reviewing the records, it has had a couple of differant brands of oil, and both 15W40 & 20W50....Personally, I'm ANTI synthetic oil - big reasons for me are the cost, and from a "psychological" stand point - I can't go the miles between changes-just seems wrong! My wife's 01 E320 wagon has over 220K (her mobile office), she has it serviced religiously by the dealer and they use synthetic - car still runs and performs beautifully - uses an expensive 3 quarts of oil between services, but according to Benz that's normal and expected.

An interesting point - My oldest son has an 06 Cooper 'S' - It tells you when to change the oil...can be between 11 & 15K, depending on driving style --- I refuse to allow my son to listen to the 'car'...He has firm instructions to have the oil changed every 5K. All maintenance on this car is covered by Mini while under warranty, but only when the car tells you it's ready for service - so we have to pay for the 'extra' oil changes - but in 'discussing' this with the service manager at Mini ---- He asked me 1 question, and I quote: "are you planning on keeping the car a long time?" Our answer was yes --- He then said, "you're doing the right thing by changing the oil on YOUR requested schedule". End of story...

WOW -- looks like I have my own 'can of worms'.........I need a drink! I'm not going to ask for feedback ----- but I'm certainly curious to hear from you....I'm on vacation this week and I'm bored.

I like delvac 15W-40 if we are talking non-synthetic.

Do not use 20w50. Since you are from the trucking world you aleady know about using oil with out the diesel ratings.

There's a $15 off 6 gal of Delo 400 coupon at Costco for the next couple of weeks.

Looks like I did open the can --- wow, my first can opening on this forum! looks like it's gonna be a great evening -- wife and kids out of town, I popped the lid on a fresh bottle of Sky -- life is great!

Ok -- seriously...I'm not familiar with Delo, but always have my Costco card in hand and look for reasons to go there, especially a sale!...Whats the scoop on Delo -- the 'weight' and anything special about it ---

Truckers must really like Delo. I see plenty of those blue gallon bottles discarded on the shoulders of the highways.
