Using kerosene to flush out the block before putting fresh oil in.

Not bothering to check the timing chain for excess stretch after purchase of car and getting it home. Just continue driving the car until the timing chain tells you it's time to change it. Most the cars I buy are in the milage bracket for possible change even though the odometer says otherwise. Perhaps a previous owner changed it or perhaps not. Very easy to check in comparison to trying to repair the potential resulting massive damage because you did not. Good ideal for a thread Hunter.

Hope this one's not too bad.. as it's a part of the annual MOT (roadworthiness) test for all cars in the UK at least 3 years old.

Mildly overheating the 617 won't hurt it. That's the beauty of the engine, all cast iron, and it makes it more durable than the aluminum/iron engines. This thread certainly has taken on a bit silliness, I thought mentioning things that will destroy ALL engines was a bit on the pointless side.

Every new diesel owner should learn this: diesels need clean air, clean fuel, heat and work to do.

Dirty air -> shortened engine life.

Dirty fuel -> plugged fuel filters (dirt).

Wet fuel -> plugged fuel filters (ice), diesel bugs, shortened injection pump life, drippy injectors.

Diesel bugs -> plugged fuel filters, shortened injection pump life, drippy injectors.

Drippy injectors -> blown glow plugs, carboned up pre-chambers.

Blown glow plugs -> hard or no start, worn out starter, dead battery.

Idling and Babying -> carboned up pre-chambers, rings and cylinder top-end, shortened engine life.

Lugging -> overheating, carboned up cylinder top-ends. You try to run up a couple flights of stairs with a clothespin over your nose and your mouth taped shut.

Clean and dry fuel means a happy engine that starts and runs well. Four bills for a new injection pump should be more than enough incentive. Clean air and good driving habits means a long life engine. And change that oil.

Sugar in the oil.
We recently pulled a 3208 Cat apart that was the victim of sabatage. The sad part of the story is that the engine was in an emergency back up power plant for a nursing home. There must be some real sickos out there.
