Mercedes Hot Rod!
A friend subscribes to AutoWeek magazine and gives them to me when he's finished. On the bottom of page 37 of the March 17 issue is an article about a '69 280SL converted to a 6.3 V8, with Mercedes 600 brakes, uprated springs, gas shocks and antiroll bar. Recently sold at auction for $66,235!

Let me guess..... the 6.3 bolted right onto the 280SL (4.5?) bell housing - and 600SL calipers and rotors fit spindle assemblies on the 107#chassis. No modification of drive train or engine mounts was required.

I'm sure I've read about this car, either in one of The Star Magazines or Mercedes Enthusiast.
I believe the work was performed at a dealer over several years. I've seen pictures, and the hood has a huge bulge in it as the motor sits too high. The article went into great detail on the large number of modifications needed to make everything fit. It started as an interesting project by one of the technicians at the dealership for PR purposes, and the project slowly went so over budget that the owner of the dealer mothballed the project for several years, but was later finished.

Anyone seen the SoCal 560SL with the Ford cammer motor. That one blew me away, the owner kept it very subtle. Externally, the only things to give it away where an additional 1" rise in the hood riser, wider rear tires, (the car had tubs) and an aftermarket steering wheel. I have never heard of one of those motors making less then 600+hp in street trim, sadly I have yet to see one in person either.

The AutoWeek article is very brief with no details on how difficult the swap was. It has a photo of a white SL roadster with no unusual hood bulge. Perhaps there are other SL V8 conversions out there. (At one time,
I used to dream of dropping a 190SL engine in my '61 180b!) Happy Motoring, Mark
