One sweet 1979 300SD 15K

I recently lost my 79 300SD to a suicidal deer and this was just posted on Craig’s list CA car 45K miles perfect condition. Should I use are equity line to buy it. I mean how often are you going to find this and it’s just an hour away from me. If I cancel the kitchen remodel my wife is just getting bids on, I could buy it tonight any Ideas how to get her to see which is more important?

http://home.comcast.net/~mr.diesel.info/MrdieselTreepadSite/index.html
then click on the folder 1979 300SD

Nice ride, . Tell her you love her and that wasting money on a kitchen remodel is silly. Remind her that after the remodel she would feel obligated to use it. Cook and stuff like that. Then the clean up, the mess . On the other hand you could spend less and go out to eat in a nice place and get there in a nice car. In comfort and saftey. However, you gotta weigh the consequences, they say the wrath of an angry wife is not plesant.
You could also contact the bidders prior, slip them a ten spot to not call or better yet have them bid way high so that the project becomes impractical. Then at the right moment, come up with the most practical solution, a 26 year old car. However like I said........
Good luck

I don't see the point in buying a low mileage car to drive...

If you pay $15,000 for this car and put 60K-70K miles on it then it is worth maybe $5K. You are better off buying a really nice one with moderately low miles, say 120K-150K miles for $5K or so and keep the extra $10K for repairs.

Even this low mileage car is still 26 years OLD and parts do deteriorate even if they don't wear out. Older, low mileage cars do not make better daily drivers than moderately low mileage examples. This car has too many miles to be a true "collector" and too few to be a daily driver, or should I say the price is too high to be a daily driver. Every mile you put on that car makes it worth less and less...whereas the $5K car will always bring $5K, or close to it if you take good care of it even if you put another 50K miles on it. Just my $.02.

This is my 2 cents so take it for what it is.

I would never spend $15k on a car like that to drive. The only time I would consider purchasing a car such as that was to baby as a toy and put maybe 2k miles a year on it. I would also never buy something like that unless I could do it without a loan. It is still an old car and will need a bunch of age related work. Also if you run 50k miles on it poof their goes $10k.

$15k would be better spent on a late model C class or Toyota.

I could not

Well the wife says it is ok if I buy it and she hopes the shift lever keeps me warm at night since that is where I will be living. Our son pointed out that the license plates are not the original plates that should give us some room to haggle over the price (Grasps for hope) say 12K for the car and we do not open the kitchen into the dining room.
I do not know if I could stand the guilt, I would feel listening to the gravel off the dirt roads I frequent hitting the paint. In addition, 50 MPH over the speed bumps behind the shopping center that we use as a short cut to the freeway would be such a sin.

From finantial point of view, kitchen remodeling makes a lot of sense. Especially in the hot market such as Bayarea. Where else can you earn tax free $$$ while you are living in it? The car is a depreciating asset.

I drove

For me it might be a good investment I dont even drive 5K miles a year but I am pretty hard on cars so then again I guess this is an issue that I need more time to mull over.

update

Another forum member has contacted me he is in negations with the seller. I have of course agreed to let him have his shot at it without us competing against each other. It just might be a forum member’s new ride soon.

I must agree. This should be a show car, not an everyday driver. For much less than 15K get one for cheap then take a trip to Germany and buy lots of good stuff for it- Euro bumpers and lights etc. Then you don't have to worry about the first stone chip, or driving it in the snow and rain etc.

That is a good point, but the diesel ones are the most practical ones you can get.

No cars are very poor investments. Their is no way you will make money on that car.

True MB's are not the most practical car out their, but they sure are nice.
