Rear suspension strut replacement help.

Hey everyone,

I have a 1987 190E 16V euro model. I need to replace some rear links on the rear end. Specifically the Pulling strut, Camber strut and the Pushing strut. I have never done something as advanced as this so I want to make sure I know what I am getting into.

I have the shop manual (blue and white book) and it does not seem that I need to remove the rear disk or backing flange thing. Is that correct? Seems like it would be a lot easer to get to some of the bolts but not sure if it is worth the hassle?

Is there anything that is under load that when I loosen something it will take my head off? Wife said she has no intention of cleaning up the mess.

The dealer want to sell me new bolts part # 201-350-45-06. 1 set for each strut. Do these wear out? I saw in the manual that they use self locking bolts but can’t I use thread lock?

According to the manual, I know I have to have the rear axle horizontal. Anything else I need to know about? Time is not to critical as I have a second car to get about in.

Also, will I have to get the rear end realigned?

Anything you guys can add would be great.

Thanks

David

Sorry David mine was a 92 300 E

When I did mine, I had the Klann compressor to replace the struts.

When I replaced most of the same component you are talking about doing there wasn't anything under compression. I did however bring the rear axle under load before I tightened everything up.

Yes., you will need the bolt set as the old bolts will not fit the new struts (i think the old bolts are larger in diameter than the holes on the new struts). Also, you may need some sleeves (210 352 00 43) to insert into the holes on the axle carrier to keep the new bolts well constrained in the axle carrier holes.

As long as you don't remove the shock absorber, you should be ok (as the shock provides the positive stop for the lower control arm and keeps the spring from coming off).
