Does anybody have any experience with Mintex Brake Pads? I heard they were dust free. Are there any disadvantages with going with a dust free pad on a 1995 S-Class? I have always used stock pads and they work great but if the dust free work just as good and the rotors last through 2 pads, seems like that would be the way to go.

I really liked the Mintex pads I bought for my old VW Jetta. Brake Dust was dramatically reduced.

I've only heard mixed results at best when trying to go to aftermarket pads for MB's. I'd try seraching the archives though, seems like I remember a good thread or two on what brand worked for who.

I believe the Textars sold as OEM are the same thing as Mintex...

We have actually had a couple of problems with Mintex pads on S-Class Mercedes -- poor fit and squeaking. They're quite popular on MLs, however. Although Mintex is associated with Textar, they provide an entirely different product. ATE pads are rock-solid and trouble-free -- and not quite as dirty as OE pads.

I installed ATE pads and rotors on my 300E about two months ago, They work fine, but my wheels still have just as much break dust on them between weekly washes as when I was using MBZ pads.

I think I will go with the ATE's. I will let you know how I think they compare with the Pagid. I have been running them for almost 200,000 miles.

the 320 wagon we bought 2 months ago had Pagid pads with ATE discs, with routine wear, only 1/3 worn. they screeched like crazy, not squealed, screeched; yikes, what a nightmare, ear-piercing!

I switched to PBR pads and ATE Powerdisc grooved rotors bought via FastLane. Ooh, the peace and quiet. how nice. and yes I applied the paste before, but it didn't help.

My guess is that the verticle groove down the center of the Pagid Pad created a harmonic under just the right pressure, which was at about 2 mph, crawling in traffic, just before full pressure for a complete stop. But that's just a guess. What a racket.

PBR are also very low dust, we have them on our BMW, they stop really well, are quiet and are indeed amazingly dust free.

I own a 90 SL500 and switched to Mintex pads several years ago after noticing all the filth on other MB owner wheels especially the fronts. I also switched to Brembo rotors and the dust problem drastically diminished. It saved my aftermarket OZ wheels.

I tried ATE's with new rotors and got a lot of squeal and the dust was the same, changed to MB's squeals gone and they stop better seems like a softer pad.

I replaced my disks and rotors with ATE about 4 months ago, and cannot seem to loose an annoying squeal. Lots of paste on the pads, lube on the caliper ect, but its still there. I suppose I could be looking at a caliper re-build, but somehow I think its probably the pads/rotors.

I have long heard/read that MB (OE) is best. Second best I have heard/read is Balo or Brembo (Brembo cost significantly more) rotors and Textar Yellow Box Pads.

Second choice is supposedly slightly better on dust and better on noise than US OE -- is supposed to be closer to German OE. I have been told that ATE Powerdisk rotors are no good on MB -- they crack, although I have them on my VW rabbits with Ferodo pads and love them.

Are the ATE discs really that bad in squealing? I had them two years prior but, had only minor squeals. It was on and off and barely noticeable when cold. No noise during when hot. I stopped using those because, I saw no need. I hadn't warped my brakes on the MB.

Where do you get the yellow box Textars? Are they semi-metallic or organic? How long they usually last on average?

Yellow Box Textars -- just got ‘em so I don't know any history. I’ve read about them here and there and there was a piece in the MBClub ‘Star’ magazine on them. Don't know the composition either. Personally I don't care about noise, as I feel good brakes should squeak sometimes (it's friction, right!?), and excessive squeaking comes from glazing. Get ‘em hot several times on hard stops and they should stop all that noise. Screeching is another matter and probably an install problem or material problem or perhaps even a bearing (just had a bad bearing and hub that did only make noise under braking for a time). My mechanic got them for me, but I have seen them online and on eBay.
