Basically all of the side bits - brake band actuators need to come out - input selector shaft and modulating pressure linkage / Bowden cable part - vacuum dashpot, reverse light switches, kick down solenoid etc Valve body needs to be removed Tail cone off... ...and gear set out - I'm not sure how the 722.3 is put together so look through the manual to be sure.

Army is too modest to admit it, but he wrote an absolutely brilliant step-by-step rebuild of his 722.1:
722.118 Automatic transmission rebuild (Monster DIY) Yours is a 722.3 which is very similar (I have done one, years ago). You can get an idea from Army's ordeal of what you need to do, but for the specifics you need to work from the 722.3 manual for tolerances, order of attack, etc...

You are treading on very dangerous ground.
Do not rely on the memory of a couple of old farts. This is the time to follow the manual that you have admitted you have. I can tell you that the VB on my bench has 18 or 19 balls- I am not sure which is correct. There is a very definite way of removing the screws, flipping it over and splitting it, but I don't remember exactly. I made the mistake it appears you are about to make. The manual has this info. It pays to take pictures and do this inside a box, naturally. EDIT: Sorry, rereading this I see you just want to remove the VB from the case. That's going to be OK- the balls will not fall out unless/until you decide to split the VB. Still, the caution remains- read the manual. I don't remember exactly the drill

This thing is a mess! Look how dirty it is, chunks of I guess friction discs. Look at the pan!

Just replace the steels. The full banner kit to rebuild it is not expensive. Bulkpart.com is where I usually score parts. Whenever I install shift kits, I always drop valve bodies into one of those 'Rubbermaid' style wash tubs. About 12" deep, 18" wide, and 24" long or so. This way nothing decides to disappear. And that thing is very gross inside. Powerwash the outside of the case at your local car wash (or back yard) is probably easiest.

tranny rebuilds
ty for posting,, I plan to rebuild mine some day and each post I read I get great ideas on how to to it right and better. Looking at the oil pan your your time is well invested,, saving it now ,, in time before more damage is inevitable.
Just corrected my mistake on trans ID, it is a 722.321,,( 1987 300 SDL ) not the 722.617,, and in a few weeks my bud has a 722.350, coming out of a scraper 560 sel 1989 gasser ,,was running,, but ? wasted my money on a 722.317 from a 90 300 td,, may be a few parts are interchangeable,, we will see,, |

04Diesel, do you know the history of your spare tranny? Mileage? Shifting issues? That old fluid looks really bad...especially the pan. I'm sure those metal clutch bands took a beating with that dark fluid. Makes me wonder what other parts got damaged. Thanks for posting all the great photos and keep it up!
