You may want to repost this with a different subject line. I THINK the initials you're thinking of were "ASD?" And in caps? I suspect many people looked at the subject line and thought (as I did) you meant "Ads" as in advertisements . . .

I don't know the answer to your question, but my W124 has ASR III, which controls brakes and throttle, and was first available in '91 in the 560 SEL, I believe.

Speaking of ads, I hate the Mercedes ads that are all over the radio in the San Francisco Bay area. Why can't such a great auto company come up with better ads. ugh. Does anyone out there feel my pain?

ADS = Adaptive Damping System
 

The M.B. ADS (Yes!, there is an M.B. system with that acronym, as there is also another one with the acronym ASD) was an extra-cost option only on the W140 and R129 series.

The SL code designation was 216 and was called "Level Control on Front and Rear Axle with Adaptive Damping System (ADS)". In 1995 the extra costed D.M. 6,100.00, and it could be fitted to the 300SL, 300SL-24, and 500SL.

The S-class code designation was 217 and was called "Self-Levelling Suspension on rear Axle with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) in Front and Rear Axles". It could be fitted to any model from the S320 up to the S600. The extra costed D.M. 4,225.00 for the S320/S420/S500 and D.M. 2,710.00 for the S600 (since the S600 had already the Self-Levelling Suspension as standard equipment).

The ADS system is not related at all to ASD or ASR.

Not true, unless my owner's manual is lying!
I can't quote it right now, but I can later. It's in my owner's manual for my MY 1995 C280; it tells what it does, and where the indicator light in the dash would be, etc.

If I recall correctly, in 1995 for the US W202, if you got the winter package on the C220, you would get 4-Wheel ETC, and if you got the winter pkg on the C280, you would get ADS.

But, to clarify the waters, here it is a simple description of the differences between ADS, ASD and ASR / ETS.

ADS = Adaptive Damping System
Details in my previous reply above.

ASD = Automatic Locking Differential

ASD monitors wheel slippage using the same sensors as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System). During acceleration at lower speeds, if the system detects wheel slippage, the differential automatically locks until traction is regained.

ASR = Automatic Slip Control

ASR acts on the rear wheels during acceleration, controlling both the brakes and/or the throttle in order to mantain maximun traction, control and directional stability.

ETS = Electronic Traction System

ETS senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration up to approx. 25 m.p.h. and individually brakes the slipping wheel to regain traction.

ASR = Automatic Slip Control

ASR senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration at any speed and individually brakes the slipping wheel and/or reduces engine torque bu cutting back throttle until available traction is regained.

The last four systems explained all deal with traction, and are completely unrelated to ADS, which is a very sophisticated (and expensive) suspension system (the father of ABC?)

The C-Class in 1995 had the ETS as part of Optional Package C1 in the C230, and the ASR was fitted to the C280 if the same optinal package was ordered.
