Question codes?

Help!!!!! I pluged my new code reader into my 97-e-420 and got two codes right away. Fuel trim malfunction and emmission controll leak. What does that Mean???????

fuel trim = engine is either running lean or rich, and it has gone so far to either value that the computers parameters no longer have the ability to adjust it to keep it within correct specifications. you will need to detemine if it is too rich or too lean before you know which way to proceed with the repairs.

emmission control leak = something in the fuel tank vapor recovery system is not sealing allowing a leak of vapor. these two codes could be related if there is a cracked hose at the fuel tank purge valve, this sytem relies on engine vacuum to operate.
