This must be my afternoon for posting questions. Anyhow, just about the time when the level of the windshield cleaner fluid reaches the halfway mark in the reservoir, the empty waring indicator light goes on the dashboard. After I top it off, the light goes off and does not come on again until the fulid reaches the halfway empty point again.

I've taken out the sensor housing and everything seems to be ok, there are no hard water deposits or other crud blocking the little holes in the sensor housing. The sensor housing itself (a sealed white tube that looks like a plastic syringe, with little holes on the sides and bottom) only comes halfway down the reservoir, so I am assuming that once the level reaches the halfway point and the cleaner no longer reaches the sensor, that's when the warning light goes on. It is somewhat annoying having to refill the reservoir at the halfway point, but I guess that's one of those German safety "things" that endear our cars to us in the first place.

If anyone has any thoughts on this subject, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

In an '86 300E that is exactly the case: half way down and you get the light. Similar case with oil light. I guess they want you live and drive safely.

In most of the MB windshield fluid reservoirs, the top half of the reservoir is able to contain twice as much water as the bottom half (the top is wider as the bottom). That is probably the reason why the warning light gets illuminated when the reservoir is half empty (in models with a straight shaped reservoir).

M Benz,

Sometimes we don't see what's in front of us....

I think you are right.

JA
