My boss was in town today to go over my budget for the year and boy what a day it was! Anyway he told me he has an 88' 260e in the garage that has not moved in 6 mos due to his tranny going out. I never even knew he had one! He has a company car and that is why he isn't to concerned about spending the cash to get it going until recently. The symptoms are nothing happens when he moves the lever to D,2,or L. It does go into reverse! He says there is no apparent noises or anything when trying to put in drive. The car has 140k and he had the tranny rebuilt about 2 yrs ago. The woman he bought it from pulled a camper with the car abd that is why it was rebuilt. Go figure! His mechanic said it would need another rebuild for about $3k! He does not really want to spend that much and is considering selling for $1K. I might consider it if you guys think there might be a less expensive fix! Oh boy 5 cars. Hmmm.

I believe you can find an independent shop to do it for much less. The problem is finding an independent shop with the experience and honesty that you need.

Do a search, there was a post not too long ago about an independent shop in New Jersey that was supposed to be good on these. It might be worth getting a transmission shipped to you from them. Or, you may find a recommendation for a shop in your area.

Good luck,

We would fix your car for around fifteen hundred dollars. I can say that almost universally because we do two or three a month and when we don't have enough pieces to fix one (a melt down) we will insert a used one. You should be able to find someone in your area close to that price.

The problem you have is undoubtably the lack of application of the B2 band. Unfortunately on 722.4 trannies this usually means a broken band itself. It is possible that the servo piston seal is broken and all of this can be determined without removing the trans. If it is a broken band it will have to be disassembled.

Looks like you'll have 4 cars. It seems like a great deal, so grab it, as long as everything else is in good condition.

Even if you buy it and sell as a PARTS car. You will get your money back, I am sure. Out of curiosity, what color is it?

Okay, heres the deal. My boss does not want to spend any more money on it. He does not know alot about hunting around for a good used part or anything like that. He just takes it to the dealer when it needs something. He will sell for $1000 and I am going to take him up on it!(Wife knows nothing) Where is a good place to find a good rebuilt or used tranny? Does anyone have a preference or a place to not buy? My mech. said he would put it in for $300. Thanks!

Joe,
Congratulations on your purchase. This seems like a great deal. In regards to the Tranny, you might check out http://www.Atlanta-Stuttgart.com they are located in Canton, Ga. Their phone number is 770-720-1110, ask for Dave or Beth.

Well I took BigBenzMans advise and got a used tranny from Atlanta-Stuttgart and had it put in. I drove the car for the first time today and it drove really good! It has great power and the tranny shifts awesome! I have a lot left to do on it. The pass. door is still smashed in and the A/C does not work but I will take my time and get it back to prime condition. I have a used door coming from Atlanta-Stuttgart coming in a few days and it is even Teal green like I need! One question- What is the typical RPM at a steady 70mph cruise in one of these things??? It seemed a little high strung today. Thanks!

Your 70 mph driving seems normal. The car is supposed to Rev high. So on your car I would say it should be at about 3300-3400 rpms, roughly. It's all normal and no need to worry!

I think what you may have is a fairly rare color. If you look at the stamped ID plate on the radiator support (near the hood latch), I think you will find 877 for the paint code. It was called Blue Green. I painted a motorcycle this color back about the time that car was new. Maybe they could come out with a color called Red Green and put in a flannel interior and deer antlers on the hood with duct tape racing stripes......Gilly

Running at 80mph brings right at 4000rpm and 85mph brings about 4200rpm! That seems awfully high! Is this a typical RPM for a 260e? Any owners out there with the same figures? I just had a used tranny put in it. Is there a possibility I could have gotten a different model or is that even possible?

Car drove excellent with good power today on my way to Atl. I am pleased considering I have about $2000 in the whole car! I need to do a little body work and get some A/C going and it will be good to go! Thanks!
