Window is 'disconnected' 1993 190e

Passenger side rear window falls down slowly while driving. I can push the window up to the top again by hand but it moves freely and obviously no longer attached to the motorized assembl6y. The up/down switch does nothing but I can hear a motor sound.

Question, should I remove the inner door panel and have a look? Or just start saving my Christmas money for MB to fix it? What typically goes wrong here?

It can't hurt to take a look. The window may have just "jumped" the regulator; might just need a nut to fix it. Either way, it helps to look at it before you take it someplace, just so that they don't try to screw you over.

Yes, I would try removing the door panel and take a look first. It might be very obvious and simple. Once you know what's broken, you may as well fix it yourself.

Here's some instructions w/ pictures on "How to remove front door panel" for the W124. Since the W201 is a baby 124, it might be similar ;)

Best of luck!

Sorry, but I can not find your link to the instructions and pictures.

Can try searching. Here's a quick breakdown, but I'm lacking sleep right now, so search for a step-by-step post.

You're basically going to have to unscrew the lock pin, remove the seat switches (pry them perpendicular to the door panel) and the plate behind them, remove the plastic trim near at the back of the door panel, and remove the weather stripping between the door panel and the window. Then you should be able to push up on the door panel and pull it from the door.

Edit: don't forget that the inner door handle and its trim piece will NOT come out w/ the door panel.
