How Mercedes F1's Ingenious Split Turbo Works

For those that haven't been following the early F1 season, Mercedes powered cars are dominating the rest as the season goes on. The turbo design appears to generate more hp than what Renault or Ferrari have been able to get.

Silver Arrow fans, this has been a great year so far.

True - best would be either 0, 60, 120 or 180 degrees for a 6 cylinder mill. The crank is stronger too.

But as you already said - its cheaper to slice off two cylinders from the cast rather than make a new cast and assembly line.

After watching qually today for the F1 race in Hungary, I watched a little of the GP2 race. GP2 sounds WAY better than F1, and that is sad.

I couldn't care less about the sound or the racing. The technology is far more interesting like the split electric turbo above. They might finally be ditching the 13" wheels for 18".

AUSmotive.com » Lotus F1 Team trials 18-inch tyres

Should be interesting to see how this affects brake technology.

Unsprung weight is up a lot with the 18" wheels. I'm not sure how much the shorter sidewalls improve handling.

Lotus . . . having a terrible F1 season this year. Unfortunately, Team Lotus is featured in a Microsoft commercial . . . about cloud computing, and the folks in Redmond must be as embarrassed as the marketing team at Nissan/Infiniti having Vettel being the face of their commercials this season as well.

Most Americans don't even seem to be aware that F1 and Indycar aren't the same thing. I don't think Lotus' results are hurting Microsoft to any meaningful degree.

I think the ads are only running on NBC's coverage of F1, as with the Infiniti ad . . . so the audience is pretty defined to F1 fans.
