O.K., I'll admit it : I like Buffets depending on how palatable the food is .
SWMBO just asked me to take her & the Foster boy to The Golden Buffet, a place my brother hipped me to last year . They're O.K., far better than Home Town here in California... _Some_ of the Chinese buffet's are great, most are not . ? What else to do on a quiet rainy Saturday afternoon, right ? . She says ' bring your book, we'll set a while & look out the window' . Thoughts ? comments ? death threats ? .

I'd say since your on the Coast, you might get better Chinese Buffet. There was a good one here. Then it went down a bit. Closed last year.
There is one called Sirloin Stockade here. It is actually VG. They did revamp the place a while back. It was actually a big upgrade. Their steaks are good etc. There are some large 'cafeterias' in the region. Johnathan Byrds is/was a large one. Sponsored cars at the Indy 500. |

All you can stuffit at the buffet
Death threats? This aint bummerfest !
Back @ OP ... In my younger days I caused a lot of financial damage to purveyors of buffets ... but haven't participated in decades. My children have taken up the cause in my stead, much to my detriment when they visit. |

We had a Chinese buffet in PA that I enjoyed for their peanut chicken...but everything else was sub-par. There was another that had some of the best sushi rolls, but other food was again, sub-par. All of them suck here in Dayton, Ohio.
Golden Corral in PA was horrible, but the one in Dayton isn't bad...the best one I visited was in Ogden, Utah. Their food was fantastic, as was the service. I'm on a diet now, so eating out is a no-no for me. I've dropped 30 pounds since January 14th, and have another 30 to go to hit my goal. I need to be there by my birthday to win a $400 bet with my brother. LOL

@ Insidious : you oughta know by now , I have a warped sense of humour .
Golden Corral is a Southern chain I'm told, so far the ones her in Califoria have been good, I always marvel at how they hire so much help and no one ever has a bad attitude . I stopped eating steak years ago, to - day I saw a guy with two large ones on his plate, bigger that Sizzler gives out . I mostly eat broiled / baked chicken / fish plus lots of rice and salad etc. so I can pretend I'm eating well and can have ice cream for desert . Liver & onions too ~ usually as much as I want and that's my # 1 comfort food dating back to 1967 . SWMBO likes fried food, I do too a bit but, I'm not getting any younger / thinner so.... We got there and there was a 10 minute wait in line, by the time we left the line was out the door and across the parking lot . It rained off and on all day, sad as I had works to do and Motocyles to ride.... Next week I guess . I thought more here would have buffet stories . ? How about SouPlantaion or the same chain under a different name in Az. ? .

I do not trust anyplace where people serve themselves. Too much double dipping, fingers and who knows what going on. I'll pass.

Never been to a true buffet that I would consider going back to. There is a place close to my office that is a "serve yourself" lunch, which is excellent. The food is cooked by an award winning chef who runs the restaurant across the street. But they charge by weight, so no free seconds.
The more traditional buffets...even in nice hotels and resorts, a lot of it is pretty mediocre, probably based on the sheer volume they need to produce, balanced with profitability. Edible but not memorable...

I've been retired for 11 years and have eaten lunch at quite a number of restaurants in northern Virginia; seven were buffets. The good buffets are in small ethnic restaurants that have a small number of dishes and a substantial number of customers so that the food does not sit in a steam table for several hours before it is eaten. I have regularly patronized three of them, which are Thai, Indian (India), and Chinese.
The most successful of the three is the Thai restaurant which typically has seven hot dishes (two noodle, two or three meat, and the rest vegetable). They also have two soups, several trays for making a salad, and two desserts. All of their dishes are well prepared and served fresh at the proper temperature. The small Indian and Chinese buffets I like also try to make sure all of their dishes are well prepared and served at the proper temperatures. The bad buffets are the big ones. We have four in our area: three serve American and Asian food, and the fourth serves just American. The meat dishes are usually tough, not well prepared, not served at hot enough temperature, and poor quality meat to start with. There are hundreds of trays of food put out at 11:00 a.m. or so and not changed until closing. The food is terrible. All of these serve lunch in the price range of 10 to 12 dollars. The Thai restaurant is very good -- as good as the downtown Washington Thai restaurants, but with more limited choices. The small Indian and Chinese are also good enough to warrant continued patronage. The big ones are bad at any price. All of these big ones appear to be chains. The small one are local independents. We also have a couple of restaurants that have very good salad bars, which are like buffets. They are cheap as soup and salad bar or sandwich and salad bar. Price 10 to 15 dollars. |

I usually trust other diners as much or more than the servers, cooks, and other kitchen help.

I don’t do buffets. Parents just let their children run around and touch everything and there’s a lot of homeless where I live. I don’t like that many people having access to my food.
