Personally, I believe there is a genuine need for some sort of meal assistance for the unfortunate folks living below the poverty level. However, it also pisses me off when I hear stories of folks buying non-essential stuff with these EBT cards.

It seems a lot of the abuse of the meal assistance program can be curbed at the retail level. I don't understand why the fed doesn't require retailers to restrict the purchases to essential nutritional needs. That would prohibit the purchase of alcohol/tobacco and non-essential items with the EBT cards. If retailers are caught violating the restrictions on EBT purchases, they ought to be fined.

The last time I saw any stats regarding SNAP fraud . . . it was in the single digit percentage. So, it appears, like many other things, to be a victim of perception rather than reality . . . like voter fraud, for instance . . .

Stores should be fined when violating the restrictions, but to be honest I don't really care what they buy with it. The most important thing is that money going back into the economy. That's in my best interest.

And the legal matters are not the reason for this the post, what I find interesting is that by catering to their base the GOP is basically hurting their donors.

$14 billion of that money went to WalMart, that's 18% of the $80 billion that the program cost. Each WalMart store makes around $2.56 million profit a year, not much but there are 7262 stores, $14 billion is a lot of stores and a lot of jobs.

My reaction to what you said in Post #5...as follows:

An EBT, from the Booberment, is OUR MONEY...TAX MONEY.

If a Booberment Contractor is acquiring it ILLEGALLY (by non-performance of the contract or out-right fraud) I want to see the company board-members, as well as the CEO, CFO, and anyother FO in that company hanging upside down by the feet-nads-whatever and being pistol-whipped to death. After about 5 or 6 public whippings of overpaid, avaricious corporate layabouts, then we need to start going after welfare cheats, medicare cheats and anyone farking the taxpayer to the tune "Free Booberment Money 'Cause No One's Caring."

Smack WalFart to the tune of what they made as a profit.

Then start taking the legs off the little liars and cheats on the street.

Give 'em all a case of the "Joe A's" from Arizona.

Rules are rules.

If the Booberment chooses to enforce ONLY the rules it wants for POLITICAL REASONS, then why should I, if my opinion of the Booderment DIFFERS, do as THEY want? But besides that; the reason I posted both articles in #1 and gave it the title "trickle up economics" is that by reducing the funds for food stamps it has significant effects on the economy.

Enough on that. BTW, that part I agree with...I just want to see the pain of the fine on the order of 3 or better.

My b!tch about the EBT matter is in that, as a Nation, we need to get p!ssed about the fraud going on. Do you get to keep money a perp gives you if the money was part of a sting operation? No.

Then, if the store is guilty of an illegal sale based on the premise that the "money" used for said purchase is illegally obtained by fraud (didn't need the EBT-Card to begin with or the conditions the card said are "forbidden" was bypassed anyway...) why shouldn't the spender get nailed to the wall too?

I know very little about fraud with food stamps, it's something so far away from my life, but I would asume that participants that are in the program would be punished if they abuse the system.

Like cheating the system is something from 2013, I doubt that.
