Monitor Advice

After 11 years, my 17" CRT monitor is finally giving up. I intend to replace with something LCD and similar size to slightly larger. Brands to avoid? Brands to look for? Any features I should be on the lookout for?

Use is general web surfing, porno, and stupid car/bike videos on youtube. I'm not a gamer.

Find what you like, then find out who actually makes the panel, then shop price. There are actually very few panel manufacturers making monitors for lots of brand names ie; Dell doesn't make panels, asus doesn't make panels, etc.

I was looking at some HP's at the store. The price seemed right. Are they any good?

Check features. For instance, some monitors don't have VESA mounting studs, which can limit future arm or wall mounting. If you need desk space, built in speakers can be a benefit. USB ports, built in webcam.

That was likely designed before the Dumb Cow (i.e. Fiorina) managed to completely botch up HP's product line. I have a Laserjet 2200 that was made in (I believe) 2002 and is still kickin. Their products have gone waaaaay downhill through the 2000s.

I've tended to have good luck with Asus laptops and displays, Dell desktops.

How does this sound?

Acer S230HL 23" widescreen LED monitor

5 ms response
LED-backlight screen
1920x1080 native resolution
250 cd/m2 monitor brightness
16:9 aspect ratio
100000000:1 dynamic contrast
Ports: DVI-D and VGA
170 degree viewing angle
Mfr 3 year limited warranty

Office Depot has it on sale for $150. I went to some other stores to look at other offerings, went and got fuel, and came back with the intention of buying this one today. Small hitch: I got there at 1930. Big sign says they're open until 2100 on Sunday. Smaller sign nearby has "back to school" hours on it: close at 1900 on Sunday. WTFO?

IPS panels have come down in price if you want something where the color doesn't shift depending on the angle you view it at (common problem on older style LCD panels). You should be able to get a 23" IPS 1080P display for 150-170 bucks. Also keep in mind a lot of monitors have gone glossy, which is nice as long as you dont have light shining directly on the monitor. Otherwise, annoying glare.

As much as i hate shopping at best buy, they have the best selection of higher quality monitors. Staples and OfficeDepot are still selling older TN panels. Which I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks for.http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemplatemapper.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=-488707670996193677&id=pcat17080&type=page&lcn=Computers+%26+Tablets&sc=abComputerSP&st=processingtime%3A%3E1900-01-01&usc=abcat0500000&cp=1&sp=%2Bcurrentprice+skuid&nrp=15&qp=q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0500000%23%230%23%2311a~~cabcat05090 00%23%230%23%2314~~nf78%7C%7C495053&add_to_pkg=false&pagetype=listing&gf=y
