The presence of a forum with "repair" threads and complaints of failures, does indicate a problem. For instance, would any of us say that Mercedes cars seldom need repair?

Even Apple's own tech website has terrabytes of threads refuting "the myth" that many Apple fanboys want to preach.
BTW, those very same fanboys are quick to scold others for not buying the additional AppleCare to extend the warranty period.

Right? I hate that ****. Just replace the whole thing, don't bother fixing what actually wrong.

Funny enough, there are people who at the first sign of a problem in a car, appliance or computer, run out and buy another. They don't want to be bothered with repairing anything. Refrigerator develops an issue? I'll just head over to Home Depot and buy a new one. Oil needs changing in the car? Why bother, I wanted a new car anyway.

They have more money than they have brains.

Wouldn't that be something? A new car every 8,000 miles! Think of that!

I'll buy a 2014 top-o-the-line S-class and just buy another in 8,000 miles! Only half a million bucks a year given my driving distance.

The genius bar has been more than awesome when getting help on all of my Apple products. (granted, everything I have is under warranty!)

Swapping my iPod/iPad out with batting an eye, replacing my AC adaptor because it was starting to discolor, even replacing my MacBook Pro with a new one when it was 2 months out of warranty!

When anyone asks me which new computer to buy, I recommend an Apple without any hesitation. Their support, their training, and their platform as a whole are just (plain and simply) awesome. Everyone I have given the recommendation to buy a mac has come back with nothing but praise. From being able to attend training on software to 1:1 support/training from Apple staff, all of them have nothing but good to say.

My $.02 - you need to look at Apple, the people that buy their computers, and the overall package. 7/10 Apple users I talk to own an Apple product are not what one would call a power user, and love the simplicity that their products offer. My parents with their iPhones/iPads/MacBooks. They don't ever have any issues, and when they do, help is easily available. They don't have the know-how or access to get PC issues solved quickly and easily, which is what made them Apple fans for life. They tried the Geek Squad, FireDog, and some other IT help services to get issues fixed, but for them (and others), nothing compatres to the guys at the Genius Bar.

They have great CS, which is why I am an Apple use (for the forseeable future at this point).

Though not many can afford to do it, believe or not there are some who do. Why bother with maintenance when you have the means to run out and buy a new car? The dealership loves it and encourages this type of behavior!

My issue with the new mac gear is that Apple has removed built in DVD readers/writers. You have to purchase an external DVD player/writer and connect it via USB (junky looking desk top). I guess they think that DVDs are a thing of the past.

What if someone needs to play a work related training DVD on their computer? According to Apple, that individual needs to buy a Windows PC so they can play their work related training DVD. Stupid.

I could argue that some brands of cars have better reps than others based on repair rates. Dunno if it would hold true in relation to the number of websites dedicated to repair of some cars over others.

Over the years Windows has evolved into a reliable GUI for running programs. It took 20 years of agony to get there.

Meanwhile, Apple is aiming it's own big guns to shoot itself in the foot by making the Mac GUI less intuitive. Tragic.

I always recommend Refurbished Apple products, either from Apple's website or from mobile providers. Can't tell them from new and it's pretty much the only way to get a discount on Apple products if you're not a student.

Bot, the failure rate of Apple devices does not deserve the legendary status that some seem to easily give. That's the bottom line. Nearly every product launch has suffered some form of glitch, engineering revision, just like all the other hardware manufacturers. Not to hard to accept since Apple has to buy parts and components from the same places Dell, Sony, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Toshiba, etc. has to.

Then you have to account for some of Apple's design choices. Thin, lightweight, low noise factor. Which has resulted in hot batteries, discolored plastic cases, power supply failures due to overheating, stress cracking . . . it looks pretty when you pull it out of the box, for sure.

I dunno about 'legendary'. In my case I have had Apple computers since I bought an Apple II+ in the early 1980's. I have NEVER had one fail.

My kid had a laptop that failed. It was tragic -- she worked to earn the money to buy it. Something fried in the power supply. Fortunately for her she had the extended warranty and they essentially gave her a refurb'd computer and transferred all HD contents over.

I know people have problems with Macs. I also recognize that my own experience is anecdotal and not terribly convincing under that circumstance. But it works for me. My brand loyalty for my personal computer is ironclad.

Like I said, I use PC's at work and they are far and away a different critter from Windows 3.1, NT, and XP (my own experience train with PC's). I use Dells exclusively and they have been very reliable. I had a problem with a RAID'd hard drive and swapped a new one in and lost nothing except time.

Apple's internal DVD drives were fragile junk. Just as well that they're external now, so plugging a new one in when the old one breaks is simple. I'd personally go with a third party tray-loading DVD drive, since slot-loading drives are prone to jamming and internal failures.
