I thought the "Go Devil" engines went away long before the CJ's came out. I picked up this '53 for a friend of mine and it has an OHV 4 cyl that's surprisingly peppy.

You're right. The Go Devil was replaced by a modified F-head version known as the Hurricane. It was available in the 1955-71 CJ-5. The Buick Dauntless V6 was available from 1965, when Kaiser bought the rights to it from GM, until 1971 when it was replaced by the AMC six AMC stretched the front end 5 inches to accommodate the I-6. Also body tubs from 1955 to 1975 are the same, while 1976 to 1983 CJs are different. CJ-7s were available with automatic transmissions and a newer all wheel drive system called 'Quadratrac' This was possible due to the longer wheelbase of the CJ-7. The CJ-5 never had an auto and always had a manual part time 4WD system... Both the CJ-5 and CJ-7 had the AMC 304 ci V8 as an option.

Thanks for the responses. I do have an 85’ CJ7 in my sights, but haven’t checked it out real well. AMC 6, 4 spd. (I’ve heard are a little weak) and hard top with 165k. Obvious rust is not to be seen, but I have not yet crawled under to check the boxed frame. Any best places to check? He wants $3900 after trying for $5000 for a while, and if it checks out I’ll offer 3500 deal 3600. I know mileage is a joke, but what should I expect? There is a Redline Weber that is running rich, and I’ll need to find out about adjustment..

There are 8 bolts holding the body to the frame. Check all of them for rust. Obvious rust places on the body are under the doors and around the rear wheel openings.
When I got mine I thought it was running rich. I used it for snow plowing a few times. I even adjusted the carb to run leaner. I finally realized that she was running on only two cylinders! I replaced the wires and plugs and now she runs on all six. The CJ is such a light vehicle that even the 232 is very peppy. If you are going to adjust the carb, get her up to operating temp, and then turn the needle valve in to get her to run leaner. I would first spray a can of gumout into the carb throat and around the linkages. You can also run a can of seafoam into it. I ran a can by dripping it slowly right into the carb throat. I purded it in until she stalled, let it sit for 15 minutes and then started her up. After belching out a cloud of black smoke, she ran much better...

Well I did it. A little rust under the drivers side door. Turns out the rich running was just an open vacuum line – shaved him down to $3400 then plugged the line and it runs great. He was a little put off, when I didn’t write him a check till I went out and bought an assortment of plugs from Carquest and made sure that fixed the problems. It does worry me a little that this same guy has been taking care of her for the last few years, but “Such is War”

I had an 85 cj7 for awhile. The carb was the weakest point on it. I never got it running good although i did put a tranny in it. It had the six cylinder with a tf999 tranny. It would have been a keeper if the frame was not rusted so bad. I ended up selling it for more than i paid. those old jeeps seem to hold their value.
