Unable to get new electric deposit waived, WTF?!?

Looking for some insight on this one. Moving into a new house, call to set up the power, they say "need to check your credit to see if we can waive the deposit". I say, "no problem" as last i checked i had a mid 700's credit score, and haven't defaulted on any payments or aquired any new debts since then. They come back and say "i'm sorry you must pay a 255 deposit". Tried finding out why, they told me to call their experian hotline and they will tell me. I call experian, talked to some dim-witted **** who was extremely rude and told me absolutely nothing. The conversation ended with me telling her to go f-herself.

It has been years since i've gotten that heated on the phone, i typically have a very calm disposition, but this lady was being so rude and arrogant it actually got to me.

Anyone have any insight for why the company wouldn't waive the electric bill? I have a 7 year history with another power company without a single late payment, and i have never made a late payment on any cc or loan i've ever had, hence my high credit score. My ego is a little blown over this, i thought that with good credit you shouldn't have to pay deposits....is this a scam or a sign of the economy?

i ended up just paying the damn thing. I've got to have it on by tomorrow or else i get to move in with no electric and no a/c(read, hot, sweaty, no music, not fun). They do give me a whopping 6% a year interest on it though(wah-freakinghoo), and return it to me in 23 months(again, wahfreakinghoo).

I still think its total bull**** though...

I cases like this you have to remember that everyone is responsible to someone else. Don't waste time with the company, call the agency that regulates them.

I had to pay cash deposits for water, electric, sewage, etc.. That's just the way they do it here. I don't think that's what's really got you though. Hope you got her name and information, I'd be talking to her supervisor or someone higher. If they don't do the car salesman thing, and just bring someone else over that's a "supervisor".

You should get a copy of your experian report from www.annualcreditreport.com in my experience the people with the best credit almost always have a lingering (usually inaccurate) medical or utility bill on their report, since the credit profile is already good its overlooked.

Wild ass guess: you do have some sort of collection out there that your not aware of you may have a high score but a utility collection will trigger what happened, its not your fault I see it on a large majority of the reports I see which is more than 500 a year.

If it's FPL, they'll at least pay interest on the deposit. (small consolation)

Small Consolation????

Where do I send MY deposit??? 6%!!!???

(Note to RG5384 - I feel your indignation though.

Maybe they need the cash to cover all their short term costs for the hurricane repairs while waiting for the payments from other utils - I saw a TON of FPL trucks and crews here in Houston and I know they've been in Loosyanna fr a while as well)

Regards,

Kevin

FPL= F***ing People & Loving it.

Regarding the credit score, I think it's a sign of the economy. My wife and I have both had scores well above 700 for the past few years. All of a sudden her's is a low 600 and mine is a mid 600, for no apparent reason. No missed or late payments, no new lines of credit and our debt has not increased yet our wages have. Go figure.

Years ago, when they told me I needed to leave a deposit (I honestly forgot to pay my bill), I asked about the rate, and then promptly asked them if I can give them extra deposit money....6% is more than what the banks are paying.

It is different with every company, and oftentimes has nothing to do with your credit score. On my building, on which their is no lien, the only way around the deposit for the power company is for my banker to write me a letter of credit.

I actually don't know if we have a deposit on the houses, but I sure am glad the PSC and the AG got together and made the power company lower the whole state's electric bill (twice now, actually)

I understand that, but he said that they needed to check his credit to waive the deposit and told them to call experian due to the credit turn down.

I know--what you told him was right (although I don't think a layman will get anywhere with the PSC because he will not be able to navigate filing anything). I was just sharing. You know I am never here past noon on Fridays: the old lady and girls are doing a shoot this afternoon so I'm getting my swerve on
