1998 E300 Turbo Diesel

My wife and I are searching for a w211 face lifted wagon, so it's time to part ways with my E300. I purchased the car 09/24/2010 with 136,203 miles from EuroMotorcars in German town Maryland. The car was a one owner trade in on a new BlueTec. I was not able to transfer any maintenance history from the previous owner, but the dealer felt it was such a nice example to keep it on their lot instead of auction/wholesale. I am a Eurocopter E145 helicopter technician and I've maintained the car to the same exacting standards including maintenance annotation. The majority of the big ticket W210 items have been dealt with.

Price: $7,000 OBO. KBB lists excellent for $7,421, and good for $7,046. The car is in excellent condition in my opinion, but I am open to sensible offers. Please, no trades.

I have a shutterfly album with over 100 pictures of the car that I can email.

Location: Cove Point, Maryland 20657

VIN: WDBJF25F6WA703406

Title: Clean, no brands

Mileage: 192,150 (this will be increasing)

Paint: Code 702 "Smoke Silver". All original paint, NO body work. There are a few rock chips on the nose, and a concentration of parking lot dings on the passenger rear door and quarter. The paint has such a nice deep shine I couldn't bring myself to have any of the blemishes touched up. It's only original once! I've only used Griot's "Best Of Show" wax with their "Speedshine" after washes.

Interior: Code 105A "MB-TEX Mushroom". The interior is standard E-class: TEX, no heated seats, no orthopedic option. It does have the integrated phone. It's nothing more than a novelty, but passenger and kids think it's neat. The seats are clean and free or cracks. I have two child car seats in the back that sit atop special upholstery protectors. There is very small burn in the rear cushion (size of grain of rice). The carpets are very clean and free of stains. There is some wear on the drivers carpet from the previous elderly owner dragging his/her feet when entering and exiting. I have the original floor mats taped on the backside so the backing won't come off on the carpet. I also have a set of Weathertech rubber floor liners for the front during winter usage. The Bose audio system sounds very terrific and has not been tampered with.

Engine: Recent glow plug change. All 6 plugs came out, 6 new Bosch plugs with copper anti-seize. The pre chambers were reamed with the correct pencil type reamer. The intake manifold was cleaned and fitted with a new gasket. The EGR valve has been electrically bypassed since 167,102 miles.
For oil I've primarily used LubroMoly 5w-40, but I also tried Amsoil European car formula. I've only used Mann oil filters. Oil change duration has typically been 5,000 miles. Fuel filters have been changed out every 10,000 miles. The last filter service was at 188,240 with Mann filters. The air filter was also changed at that time along with a mass air flow sensor cleaning. The coolant was flushed and replaced with Mercedes-Benz coolant and distilled water at 159,100 miles. A Behr thermostat was also fitted. A new catalytic convertor was fitted at 152,306 miles to the tune of $517. Serpentine belt and auxiliary fan belts changed at 162,920. The power steering system was flushed at 167,102 using Mercedes-Benz non synthetic fluid (the correct fluid for these). The car did not come with a engine block heater cord, so a replacement was sourced through NAPA. I routed the cord though ceramic spark plug boots to protect from radiant engine heat and the remainder of the cord is routed though 3/8 flexible conduit. At this time I also installed a 250 Watt heating pad to the oil pan, though I've never found myself in temperatures cold enough to really use it. The cord is hidden away behind the front license plate. The plug for the block heater is routed though the front towing point removable grill. I added aviation clear scuff tape to the grill so the cord end would not damage the paint. The plug can be tucked back behind the grill for the warmer months. I am mechanically sympathetic towards cold engines, hence the 2 heating sources.

Suspension: At 162,768 miles I added H&R sport springs (p/n: 29724.2). The TireRack's description noted a 1.4" ride height decrease in the front, and 1.3" in the rear. At initial install, without any camber corrective components, the front camber was only out of specification by 3/10 of a degree. At 166,100 miles I changed the front spring pads to p/n: 210 325 04 84 (17mm), and the rear to 210 325 02 84 (9mm). I also added the Mercedes-Benz camber repair bolts to the front control arms and rear camber links. Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis aligned the car at 166,198 miles and adjusted the suspension geometry back into specification. At 180,203 miles I completely refreshed the suspension. The OE lower ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, and sway bar mounts were sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The aft (of the front) control arm bushings were showing signs of wear so I purchased a set of polyurethane, eccentric adjustable bushings from K-MAC in Australia ($480). To gain full adjustability in the rear I purchased a beautiful set of adjustable rear camber links from Jeff at MB Arts ($310). I chose to renew the shock absorbers with Sachs-Boge units. During this time I disassembled the brakes, cleaned, lubed and painted the components. DOT 4 fluid was used to flush and service the system. New tires (listed below) were fitted and a new alignment was performed. Total cost of the suspension refresh was approximately $2,500. The alignment failed to bring the left front camber into specification. The final measurement was -1.0 degree on the left front (out 2/10 of a degree), while the right front was in specification at -0.8 degree. So, the $80 repair bolts previously did the job of camber correction while the $480 bushings did not! I've covered 17,000 trouble free miles with the current configuration and have not noticed abnormal tire wear or handling characteristics. The ride is firmer than stock with the sport springs, but not overly firm thanks to the Sachs-Boge shocks. If you've ever driven a w211 E55/63, or E350 with the AMG package, it's very similar ride quality. The tire to fender gap is perfectly matched and does not rub under any condition, regardless of passengers and associated luggage. I retained the original springs, rear camber links, and spring pads. The only item you would need to revert the car back to original is a set of front control arm bushings. New control arms with bushings already installed sell as a pair for $340 from SomethinghausAZ. No special tools required other than a torque wrench, spring compressor, floor jack and some safety stands. I replaced everything in my garage. The suspension alterations may to be to everyone's taste, but the ride is not overly sporty, and original configuration can be achieved in one day's worth of work with minimal expense.

Tires: In March of 2011 I removed the original 16" wheels in favor of Mercedes-Benz "Funnel Spoke" wheels from a 2006 C230 Sport. They are 17" diameter and staggered width. At 180,203 miles I had Goodyear Eagle GT all season tires fitted. Sizing is 225/45R17 in the front, and 245/45R17 in the rear. I haven't had the tires in the snow yet, but being all season I have to image they're perform well. The original wheels are in fair condition with moderate curb damage to at least 2 wheels. The Continental tires that were original equipment in 1998 need replaced to be safe. The wheels still have Mercedes weights on them, a cue that prior vehicle service was exclusive to Mercedes-Benz service centers. The full size spare was rotated in at some point during the car's like.

Drivetrain: The transmission fluid was serviced at 154,480 with Mercedes-Benz synthetic fluid. The pan and torque convertor both have drain plugs making the fluid change very simple. A transmission filter and gasket were also fitted. A genuine Mercedes transmission dipstick tool was purchased and will be included in the sale. The rear differential was serviced at 156,201. I chose Royal Purple 75W90 synthetic after a noticeable difference in my wife's Yukon Denali.

Misc: The windows were professionally tinted on 08-03-2012 using ADB 30% "Bronze" film. The color really complements the smoke silver paint and is nearly a perfect match to the bronze window trim. I've never been questioned on the legality of the film. I believe 35% is normally the legal limit. The headlight lenses were separated and cleaned around the same time as the tint. I had Lamin-X yellow 20 mil film on the smaller high beam lens, as sort of a tribute to the American w123 models. I applied clear film to the low beams lights as it came with the package. I have since removed the yellow, but retained the clear film on the low beam lenses for added protection from road debris. At 167,210 miles I replaced both fog light lenses due to pitting. I used Bosch units as replacements. The low slung fog light lenses were covered in the same 20 mil clear Lamin-X film to keep them perfectly new. At 163,301 miles I encountered a crack in the windshield. Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis recommended I use "Banner Glass" in Silver Spring MD. The installation was perfect and has been leak free. I added the new style "Mercedes-Benz" sticker to the lower right hand side to keep things correct looking.

Rust: There is none. The spring purchases are immaculate, the suspension components and perfect, the fenders are clean and free of corrosion. About twice a year I remove the inner fender liners and clean the body. I've applied an aviation corrosion prevention compound called "Corban 33" to most areas that could potentially rust. Per a Mercedes service campaign, I removed the trunk lock gasket and make sure there wasn't rust starting. Also per another service campaign I checked behind the door seals for any corrosion. I've removed the mid door trim and touched up a few hidden spots where the moulding was chaffing the paint away. I have the OEM paint touch up stick, but chose to use clear so I could keep my eye on the metal. If you own a W210, pull the moldings off via youtube video and check for paint chaffing!

What the car will need: Last month the instrument cluster displayed a "DISPLAY DEFECTIVE" message. I've found that it's commonly caused by a windshield level sensor, or coolant level sensor. Hitting the "R" button on the dash acknowledges the caution and the normal display of mileage, trip exc. is displayed. I noticed some air bubbles in the clear plastic fuel lines. This is a common 606 Diesel issue. The idle at a cold start is just ever so slightly "rough" until the air is purged from the system. I believe new lines can be purchased for under $100. The fuel return lines (cloth braided) are original, and really should be replaced as preventive maintenance. The DV seals show no sign of leakage, but it's another one of those 606 diesel issues that should be planned for. The injectors have never been out of the car to best of my knowledge, so at the least a fuel nozzle replacement should be planned. No "nailing" that I can hear. The serpentine belt damper that connects to the cylinder head resonates during a cold start, but goes away as the engine comes up to operating temperature. The front lower valence (the black trim part) has parking scuffs on both sides. It's not very noticeable, but since I know it' there it bothers me.

Feel free to contact me via email or phone.

Probably the finest for sale ad I have ever encountered. And I am pretty much a crotchety old man who has owned a fleet of Benzes. Just wanted to say that. beautifully presented, well-priced. My brother has one of these with similar mileage and he doesn't do diddly maintenance-wise. I imagine this one's just getting broken in. GLWS!

Thank you very much. Working in aviation maintenance and associated log book annotation has set the bar in which I maintain my own automobiles.

My wife and I took the E300 on a lovely 150 mile Sunday trip today. Stops included the United States Naval Academy, Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis (our shopping spot for a w211), and Herrington Harbor South. The car preformed flawlessly and was a serious joy on back roads that hug the Chesapeake bay. Enjoy the low quality Iphone pictures below...

I've decided to keep the car a little longer. I apologize for the late replies, I've been OCONUS for a little while. Thanks for all of the positive comments!

I am in no hurry to replace my car, and it seems that yours is might be a fantastic replacement. Will you give me a heads up when you are ready?

Thanks for the consideration.

I agree with your "firm" price...your car is an EXCEPTIONALLY clean example, and the undercarriage presentation looks show car quality- even a little nicer than mine. Combine that with your impeccable documentation and it is worth every penny!
