Quick Question, is this a W124 or w210? If so, I would deffinitely suggest the Firestone Firehawk SH30. Gives tons of mileage (50,000 mile warranty) Great in Wet and Dry, and H-rated All-Season. Is very good compared to many of its counterparts. These tires are a little more biased to Touring then High Performance, but It better suits the characteristics of your E300 Diesel. Also, they are nicely priced.

According to what model this is going on, I would recommend the following sizes:

w124:
205/60/15

w210:
215/55/16
(235/50/16, if you wanted wider w/o changing wheels and adversely affectomg your speedo, however, snow traction would be altered due to the wider footprint)

The Firestone are available in the 205/60/15 size, but not the 215/55/16s.

For 215/55/16, I would recommend one of the Birdgestone RE950 highly, unless you don't like direction tread patterns because of the rotation limits, then I would go with Dunlop's new SP Sport A2.

Hope that helps, Good luck.

Safe Driving.

Question

what do you guys suggest for a 86 300SDL Turbo Diesel? I've heard from many people that Michelins are not the greatest, do you think that the bridgestones would be my best bet? thanks

Hi All:

If you are looking for a excellent tire that handles both wet and dry situations, try the Toyo Proxes T1-S.

It has been a pleasure driving on these tires. It holds the road very well in all situations (very predictable) and is a very smooth tire to ride on but a little sluggish on cornering. It is pretty quiet, you will hear the wind noise before you hear the road.

Here is a picture of the tire.

Here is the specs.

V, W, Y and Z speed-rated (depending on size)
UTQG Treadwear 280
UTQG Traction AA
UTQG Temperature A

I have no complaints about this tire. It works great for Hawaii. We only have wet and dry conditions all year around.

I hope this info helps.

Aloha,
Eric

I second the SP Sport A2 vote

I like Dunlop; I think you get a great tire for the money. I put a set (225/50-16) on our W210. they are quiet and great in the rain. I have the same size SP5000s on my new Passat and they are just as good, maybe slightly quieter (or is it just 'cause I can hear the tires better in the Benz due to the quieter cabin)?

tires tires tires

I have been very happy with Mich. X-one's. They are the best handling tire for all season that I have ever had. I have tried MX4's, MXV4's, MXL's, etc, and I am now on my second set of X-ones.

I've had Bridgestone, Dunlop and Michellin ... and the best has to be Michellin for excellent road handling AND durability.

The current set of Michellin has lasted me over a year and a half. Compare this to 8 months for the Bridgestone and 6 months for the Dunlop.

Michellin might cost a little more, but its worth the extra miles.

Consider Nokian NRVs

I haven't tried 'em myself, but am waiting patiently for my current Dunlop Sport 5000s to wear enough to justify replacement. Stu Ritter reviewed Nokian NRVs about a year ago in the STAR and loved them. Great handling, precise feel.

If you're looking for an all-season radial with a wear-rating of about 400, and still "Z" rated, which means you'll have a fairly stiff sidewall, go with the BF Goodrich KDWS (Costco carries them).

In a 205/55ZR16 size, they run about $100/each.

Remember, with a heavy car you want the same or higher load-rating. If your stock size is 195/65VR15, then I believe the load rating is "91".

The Nokian NRV's are also great. I have their "Z" rated tire, NRZi's, and they hold up well for both daily and track use.

Best of luck,
:-) neil

The AVS DB's from Yokohama are the quietest tire I have every driven .... The Turanza H Revo is also an excellent choice with ride quality similar to the Michelin MXV4 but better handling, wear and adverse weather grip.
