Who puts plugs into a tire sidewall!!

Had a really nasty blow out tonight in the 240D. After I got the tire off I saw on the inside sidewall a patch plug and starting in the plug hole was a 5 inch blow out wound. Its really my fault for not checking closer I guess, but I never noticed the patch when I had the wheels off. Just goes to show you never know that the last "mechanic" did on your car!

I don't even like a plug in the tread.........if I have the time, I'll bring it to a shop to dismount the tire and patch it from the inside with a hot patch. Naturally, they don't want to do this most of the time.

A plug in the sidewall........ ............a true idiot........

i never plug a sidewall, they flex too much, but when my tires get down to about 1/3 tread left i'll plug em to no end,it costs like 10 bucks to get anybody to even mess with ,and the tire isn't worth 10 bucks,i had one tire on my truck about 5 years ago that had 12 plugs in it,at 10 bucks a pop to fix theres 120 bucks for a 75 dollar tire.

a CASE of plugs only costs 6.00. well a pack of 12 sheets with 7 plugs each sheet from the SNAP ON truck.
and a CHEAPO plug kit from the gas station usually comes with at least 3 pluggs for 5 or 10.00 I bet the truck tire owner had his own plug kit.
I keep mine in the truck toolbox. it's snap on though...
I would never plug a sidewall though. not enough rubber to hold it. and the flex would just spit it out I bet. Well, maybe a plug in a sidewall to get the tire to hold air to the tire replacement shop. and then only if I had no spare.
John

Buy yourself a plug kit and the cost will be reduced by about 90%.

Our van has had a plug in the tread of one of its rear tires for years/many miles, and its been fine....it was a $45 cheapo tire from sam's club, and it still works....someone even stuck a pushpin into the sidewall a little while ago to try to pop it, its still there, hasn't leaked or hurt anything yet.....

On my car I have a set of 4 excellent tires....I accept only the best on my car....my dad's SD also has 4 new/excellent ones....we kinda neglect the van.....

a plug and patch is actully better than just a patch. when using only a patch water can get into the cords and rust. thus causing seperation. thats supposed to be the proper way to patch a tire. anything in the side wall should not be patched! i have never seen a tire shop use a plug without taking the tire off the rim. the procedure is to find the hole, make the hole bigger to 1/8" and then use a plug patch. coat the plug and patch in cold vulcanizing fluid(rubber cement) let it dry, pull through hole, work the patch flat with the special tool and then trim the plug flush with the tread. one that is done, apply repair sealant over patch and mount on rim. and that is the proper way to patch a tire.

Clearly, you frequent the most professional of shops on the planet.

Nobody removes the tire anymore unless you demand it and pay for it.

We don't have them around here.........Firestone and Goodyear rule the roost.

I frequent an independent and he'll remove the tire without too much prodding, but, he'd just as soon allow his men to plug one of them if the customer is ignorant.

I've had a pinhole leak in my sidewall. A can of fix-a-flat cured that.
