Location of 280 engine number?

location of engine number on 1985 280sl?
There is a number 153624 stamped on valve cover--is this the engine No?
I have factory build card in German language--is the engine number on that?
The owners manual is vague on location for 280s

I'd expect the engine number to be on the block as it is in all other motors that I am aware of.

Can not find any numbers stamped on block that are visible from top of motor.
Still think it is the number stamped on the valve cover

Actually cast into the cam cover (and the cam covers of innumerable MB engines); not stamped.

OK thanks Frank.
Should have said cam cover--not valve cover.

All I needed to know.

It is stamped into the front left top of the block below the head. Sorry for the blurry pic.

The block is what needs to be numbered, not any part that can be removed. I have found all that I can think of have it stamped on a place that has been milled, usually the top of the block.
