At least with vintage watches you know whether the design, works, etc. could stand the test of time. Plus, you're more likely to run across a good deal on one of those.

Contrary to what most people believe, from my own experiments I've found that electronic/digital clocks (say a digital wristwatch, the clock of an usual computer etc) are not masterpieces of accuracy compared to good quality mechanical movements. They are accurate, indeed, but not enough to avoid periodic adjustment. For example, in my home desktop computer, the clock looses about 2 minutes/month (about -4 seconds/day) while the desktop computer at my office, which is thought to be a 'high-grade' workstation, gains some 2 minutes/month.

Also, high-grade quartz movements from Seiko are rated to +/- 20 seconds/month (~0.67 seconds/day), while COSC standards for quartz allow +/- 0.07 sec/day which would be an extraordinary accuracy (99,99975 percent!!)

As I've said in an earlier message, my Candino automatic lost about 10 seconds/week (~1.42 sec/day) after it's January repair and adjustment, now it looses about 50 seconds in 9 days (~5.55 sec/day), which is still pretty accurate if adjusted once per week to standard time. Factory tolerance for automatic movements allows even 40 sec/day variations, which led to the crappy myth of "that's all automatics do"

Hey Neil, nice to hear from you

My absolute favorite piece just happens to be away right now for a factory service, but here is a picture. Its the only timepiece I enjoy just holding and looking at.

Question for all the Seamaster fans out there.

How can you tell if its real or a replica? I have been looking for a new wrist watch, and came across a few old Seamasters at a local pawn shop.

Browse a watch forum....

and post pics of watch for the experts to view!! Also, the movement should be examined to be sure it belongs to that model.

TimeZone is a great general info watch forum with brand specific pages, including Omega. There are also specific Omega forums out there.

Good luck! Post pics here if you buy something.

Acesful, I'd love to see the movement in that Tiffany watch. They contracted their watches to top Swiss manufacturers so it would be interesting to see who made the movement.

Hi-power, those are freakin fantastic! Love those chunky Omegas.

Car: 1973 Mercedes Benz 450SL

Watch:$45 Zurich sports watch(nearly perfect time, loses about 30s every 6mos)
Old Caravelle from the '60s(Grampas [Near perfect time keeper])
A pocketwatch I have somewhere in my dresser (can't say, don't use it enough)
Among a horde of other deceased watches I've gone through since I was in 3rd grade.

What can I say, I'm 16

I think i would have fought someone in a ring for a 450SL when I was 16.

December Issue of WatchTime....

has an article on special edition watches that represent car manufacturers. They discuss these partnerships:
  • Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG Edition IWC & IWC Big Ingenieur
  • Bently Continental Flying Spur & Breitling For Bentley GMT Chronograph
  • Ferrari California & Panerai Ferrari Chrono Monopulsante GMT
  • Williams F1 Toyota FW30 & Oris Williams F1 Team Chronograph
  • Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione & Contagiri 8C Mazzuoli
  • Ken Okuyama KO7 Concept Car & Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 36 RS
While there are few wristwatch-dedicated magazines, WatchTime seems to give the best bang for the buck.
